Considering a new bike...
« on: May 07, 2006, 09:01:30 AM »
Hi...

Deep inside I am a chopper/bobber guy, I like the ROAH of a huuuuge twin twin engine just slugging it's way down the road, and I don't think any CB would be able to fulfill this for me.

And I do like the classics, so I've been looking on a Harley from '75 a great build with nice lines it is...

This beast will cost me ~11.000 USD, and my CB is in the ballpark of 2500 USD, so I would have to talk with the bank.

This wouldn't be a problem for others, but I'm 18 and finishing college, or what you'll call it.

And I'm going on a fulltime job for a year, for then after to go back to school.

But I have two options.

1. Buy the Harley

2. Make the CB a NICE rider, paintjob, wheels, not a full tear down, engine will stay in.

What do you think?

Keeping them both could be possible, but I don't have the time or lust I think :/

LASSENC---->
I came from the High dollar v-twin world, where a set of "raw" pipes costs upwards of $1000  ::) :o ::) When I worked at the shop (3 years) , due to my environment, prices like that became normal to me. ::). $30,000 bikes were looked at as "entry level" models. The custom world of bikes is a weird one, let me tell ya...

Anyways, when I bought my CB, I had no other plans then to ride it to and from work, to save on gas, and get my motorcycle "itch" taken care of. I had sold my custom bikes to afford the 55 (best move I made)About a week after I bought the CB , I found this website, saw the bikes Carpy was making , etc..I knew for a few bucks I could change my otherwise "stock" bike into somethig more..Not that it is finished, but my CB has slowly became a bobber/custom/cafe/streetfighter monster that I am proud to call mine. I am all about the CB because parts are way cheaper, i mean WAY CHEAPER than anything American v-twin related. I could build 10 of these CB based bikes for the price of one stock HD. The CB handles my motorcycle itch fine, and the 55 handles the car/automotive side of my obession..

If money is an issue, I would stick with the CB , and do a few small things to make it the way you want. You can do a sweet paintjob (rattlecan), 16'' HD rear wheel (Ebay), some drag type bars (Ebay), custom tank (Ebay) , and have yourself a sweet low cost racer..You have your entire life to get the HD Bobber you want...

My 4cents...

I agree with what Proteal says. Keep the CB! Admittedly, I bought my CB750 mostly the way you see her in my avatar but I've done some things here and there with her. If I had my choice and the money, I'd love a harley. But, after I got this bike, it scratches my LOUD pipe and chopper itch just great. I don't think I could be happier. This bike and I have had some great rides and I wouldn't trade her for a brand new Harley in a straight across trade.

This is what owning a bike is all about, have great rides and making the bike yours to your preferences by adding and subtracting parts to fit what you want. Make it like you like it!

Peace and Long Rides,

Jeff

You know, it doesnt have to be a harley. Sure on average, a harley does have more aftermarket butthere are other choices out there. the prices of a lot of the honda v-twins is less then the price of a used harley. Find a vtx 1300 or something like that. Ride it, see if it does what you like. As forthe cb. Keep it. there have been plenty of people here that say how they should have never gotten rid of theirs years ago. They are lucky now to get them as no new ones are being made and they are gradually disapearing. You get rid of yours, you may never be able to get another one.

I have a plan that will get you the Honda and a killer V-Twin for the same price of one Harley; get an ooler Guzzi and do it up, too.  The Guz has terrific pull and great sound.  GREAT sound. Amazing mid-range.  Plus, you're really young- you have plenty of time to get all the stuff you need.  If I wasn't always in such a rush, I never would have sold this;

I'm only the occasional "race" type, love choppers, classics, low litre performance and so.

But I'll keep the CB untill I get what I want for it and still get the Harley I think...

It doesn't have to be a Harley though, it'll all be decided Thursday!

I'm by the way not doing any show high-chrome thing with the Harley.

It has to be a rider with loud pipes, and I like the looks it has now, the one I've been looking at of course.

Hey there Uncle, That Moto Guzzi is a sharp looking bike. I've never ridden one. Would like to. I have a question about them. When you're sitting still and you rev it up, does the bike have any movement, like from side to side? With the way the motor's laid out like it is. I've always liked the look and have seen several cafe'd and customs that were pretty tough looking. I'll bet you do miss it. Better go for now. Later on, Bill

Personally I'd never buy a Harley.  You can get any Japenese cruiser for half the cost and get double the performance out of them.  The aftermarket won't bend you over and you can rest assured your not riding old tech farm equipment.  Just my two sense.  There are those that will disagree but I like some sort of performance in my bikes.  The Jap cruisers can actually corner and sound just as good.  Look into the Yamaha Warrior, my cousin has one and it moves, sounds great, costs $10,000 new and handles good too.  The similar Harley V-Rod (brother has one) costs almost 5-7k more and handles like poo on a good day.

Duster , you took the words outta my mouth. That is WAY too much to pay for that bike.
Looks like a old bike with some drag specialties bits & pieces thown on it to make it "custom".
I saw lots of bikes like this at the last job.

Look into the Yamaha warrior. It is a sweet bike, rides nice, an can be made ot look sick as hell.
Cant beat jap iron (old or new) for the price. Never could, never will...

Not going for that kind of look at all :P

I'll figure something out, think I'll keep the CB and get another bike too :)

I know what you want, believe me I am right their with ya.
I am not much older than you (26) , and have been in your spot many a times..

For the money you are gonna spend , just to get a HD, you can have another bike which can be
made to look just as cool as any HD "bobber" , with the reliability of a Jap bike.

Sounds nice :)

I have four solutions atm.

1. Partly restore the CB (Keep engine in frame)
2. Get a 2 year old Suzuki SV 650, and keep the CB
3. Get an old nice english bike, keeping the CB
4. A large displacement chopper, keeping the CB :)

Number 2 sounds like the best idea to me.
his way you could do whatever you want to the CB, and have the
SV650 for a fast daily rider...
