look at my primary chain!!!
« on: September 09, 2011, 01:52:13 PM »
anyways in another thread it was mentioned i should drop the oil pan and check the "play" in the primary chain. anyways i checked my main motor and this is what it looks like

the video and the pictures are my main motor only

cb550 loose primary chain :(

sorry about the background noise pawnstars was on jtv playing on my laptop  :P

sitting

pulled up

----------------------------------

from the other side

sitting

pulled up

---------------------------------------

sitting

pushed down

-------------------------------------------

then you can kinda see some scratched

--------------------------------

oddly though i looked at my other parts motor and the chain is definitely loser but id doesn't have any chain rubbing like the picture above of my pain motor.

its nice that the oil filter screen in both motors where nice and clean. also there was so metal or debris in the oil pan, just a little slug

I've seen a couple recent posts about primary chains and it has me interested (aka worried).  So you can see where it's chewing into your case?

under power the top is pulled as tight as hell which lets the bottom section that you were rattling get even slacker, try and wrangle a mirror up there to spot the area it might be rubbing on,go to the dentist and have some teeth pulled out or drilled and gansta gold teeth fitted(i like solid chrome myself) then when hes not looking steal the little mirror they use,,,i think that chain looks past its use by date,,i know its a major job but you want to just ride the bike and not have any issues once its on the road,,you have a spare engine see how you go taking it apart?every single piece has to be washed and cleaned almost germ free before reassembly,,its a sort of plan A becomes plan B thing so while its apart the cam chain should be done, replace any sloppy bearings, look at the dogs on the gears and forks etc, each and every seal replaced, you can get away with reusing bearings etc if they are good,,the primary chain is a case wrecker if its let go too long.

he is right I have 30,000 miles on mine and it is not anywhere as loose as that but it does make some noise in neutral but then they all do

itll rattle worse if your carbs are out of sync,,and/or your idle is too low or its idling cold and #$%*ty,they shouldnt rattle idling,if it does and all else is good it needs replacing.

ok then how about this.....

im going to put the bike together and ride it for the last 2 months or so before it starts snowing.

then ill carry my engine into the basement and do a complete engine tear down and rebuild it. ive spent enough money sparing no expense on anything else ill completely rebuild the engine to spec (throw in a cb650 cam and tach drive)

is there some sweet aftermarket parts i can throw in the motor that will make it faster? (that isnt outrageously priced)

looks pretty shot man.  maybe not quite as loose as mine, but pretty close.  DO it now.  Its a #$%* but the consequences of not doing it are far worse later down the road.

Check my motor rebuild thread and watch my videos to compare.  its hard to tell without actually being there to feel the play.

You made me think about it after I cheered knowing someone else would like to know what these control freaks are up to.

like i said i will be rebuilding that engine.

but of now i have 2 months or so before snow comes so i was just saying ill ride it till then. when i get it running ill listen to the motor to see if the chain is hitting anything.

Well the choice is yours...

I personally wouldn't want to pull a motor twice.  If you saw my thread you will notice I pulled the motor on August 25th and am already back riding.  I spent most of that time waiting on parts.  With diligence and parts ordered soon you could have a month and a half of riding time with a motor that isn't going to destroy itself.
