An introduction and New project (1976 750F restoration)

Update: 4-4-12 after reading and researching alot on this forum I'm going to rebuild this bike as close to original as I can for reasonable money, not chop it up and cafe it


Hey guys, I'm  new to this forum, My names john

I've got a lot of experience messing with cars, and Bicycles, but motorized 2 wheelers are new to me

I started with this:

1983 Honda Aero 50 scooter that wasn't running when I got it



I fixed the fuel issue and got it running nicely, and new non 80s vintage tires are in the mail

so today I got this:

a 1977 CB750 supersport

its new to me with 19k miles, not currently running, but apparently it ran 2 years ago when stored, I have to reweld the exhaust as on of the headers disconnected from the collector
(its a 4 into 1 with a flat collector, anyone know the make?)

before riding I'll be changing all fluids doing some cleaning and lubing









I think after a cleaning and getting it running I'll paint it British racing green, I'm still unsure as to if I want to do cafe bars yet or not

oh, anyone know a fix for this, the side stand is broken



I don't know much about this bike, if anyone would like to chime in I'd appreciate , I think theres a flip up sissy bar thing in the back, and is this the correct seat for this year? it came with a second seat thats been badly recovered, I like the seat thats on it now, but the base is rusing and the seams are riping

Hey John, nice find.. Should be lots of fun getting her to run.... Have you gotten a battery for it yet to see if it turns on?

hey, thanks, I do have a battery but it was low on fluid, I let a friend try to revive it, we'll see if that works

I did push the kickstart over and it seems to rotate the engine smoothly so thats hopefully a good sign

change the oil, remove the spark plugs poor 1 tablespoon of oil in there and replace the plugs.... Then try to turn her over

cool, will do, anything special to do on changing the oil on a device with dry sump, besides draining the tank, do I do anything for the block other than the filter, and how much and what type of oil do these things like

That looks like a "bitsa" bike
that frame is a 75-76 i think
and looks like a K front end

i have a soft spot for the Fs

the vin says 76 on the frame, , I though it was a made in 76, 77 model year type of thing

by bitsa, you mean parts off all sorts of stuff?

maybe a late 76 but the frame is a 76, you can tell by the rear master mount
it will make a difference when ordering parts


and yes its a bike of bits from other bikes
not a bad thing but makes some things harder

Another bike that needs to be completely stripped down and completely rebuilt.

33 years of corrosion and neglect.

I always at amazed at how many CB750's are out there that have less than 30,000 miles and were left to rot.
I figure the owners got older ,got married,had children or went in the military(life moved on), and the bike got left in yesteryear.

The good thing is they ARE steel ,no aluminum frame ,no electronic boxes, and they will save the next generation from having to buy a $9,000-$20,000 dollar extreme sportbike.

hey guys, I'm having an issue with the exhaust

it didn't come on the bike and I'm trying to mount it up

but the mounting point doesn't seem to line up with anything



funny thing is the divot in the muffler thats for the brake pedal pivot is right where it should be

any thoughts?

Maybe it was modded? Is the exhaust correct for the bike? F's and K's has some differences that show up in exhaust support placement.

update:

heres the bike as of now



I've been soda blasting the alloy parts of the front end in preparation for painting

I'm gonna replace the steering bearings while the front end is apart

I'll also be relacing the wheels, replacing the tires/ tubes and the chain/ sprockets, and replacing the entire brake system

after reading my first few posts, I'd like to give some updates with what I've learned from the forum, and what I've done on the bike

the bike wasn't running when  I got it, I changed all the fluids, cleaned the carbs, put a new battery in and it fired right up

the headers that came with the bike were the factory F headers, they were rusted, I've since gotten new used ones and the correct exhaust

I've sourced the factory turn signals, and headlight brackets

the bike will be a budget restoration, and the color will the factory sulfur yellow from the 76 750F

You need to buy a workshop manual. Now.

updates:

this is the bike as of now, the tank/ seat/ cowl are just kinda laid on there as I have a bunch or wetsanding and more painting to do



I also rebuilt the wheels with buchanons spokes



the forks are rebuilt and polished, the whole brake system has been cleaned and painted, and it waiting on rebuild parts

also the whole trees/ gauge holders/ headlight buckets are being painted satin black and will go on with new all balls bearings shortly
