----Warning-Graphic Kreeme Pics Inside----
« on: September 19, 2011, 12:48:18 PM »
Ah Kreeme. Never have been a big fan. Have had to remove it from a couple different CB750 tanks.Did my GT550 tank Sunday afternoon, had rust, gave it a poke and she was done.Got real lucky as I was able to pull most of it out in one piece and several large ones, exposing a tank completely covered in rust.Probably a really crap ass prep job at one time by who knows who.
Slobbered it up well with Turtle Wax,  gave it a little wash out with the Works and a bunch of bolts till clean, neutralized, the old speed dry with my reversible shop vac /blower at a 165mph wind and coated it again with another product Red-Kote.Have had good luck so far--(knocking on wood).Would not have coated it at all if it was a regular driver though keeping it full of gas.Metal though treated with acid to remove rust is naked to the world and quite venerable to more rust.

This is inspiring thanks. I got a tank that the PO just did a decent paint job on with failing kreeme job inside(wtf?). Was not lookin forward to removing it as the last time I tried coating a tank(redkote) it ended up casting what looked like a diseased human organ(kidney or liver take you pick) and long story short was a major pain.Well after reading and reading and reading some more. I have decided that I would never use a tank liner again. If the rust can be removed great then follow with naval jelly swish flush with gas and keep it topped off . Ramble ramble , did you use acetone or mek? And how long to stew for?inquiring minds wanna knowM

I have had good luck soaking my tanks with evapo rust from tsc or harbor freight I use two gallons do the bottom and then flip it over with the breather plugged and let the other side soak keep flipping once a day till the rust is gone then coat if you must but rinse it out with denatured alcohol and let dry first I hate coating tanks I would rather cut out the bad pieces and weld in new but I don't recommend it to anyone that does not know how to weld gas tanks

On this particular tank all I did was remove the petcock, drain the gas and thouroughly dried it out and let it set for a couple days. Originally I was going to just rinse it out but noticed the film failure. Was able to get under it and lift with different gadgets threw the filler and because the rust was so uniform and prevalent under it it simply peeled off, mostly in one piece, and I worked it all out threw the filler hole.WEIRD, first time for that.
I have on other tanks been able to remove the Kreeme with chemicals which is the norm. On mine I used a certain brand of furniture stripper I have in quantities still in my old wood shop.Have to be very careful, like a surgeon that you do not spill a drop on the paint and go through a series of different step in a particular order along with specific items to minimize the risks.Hate the job but have cleaned a lot of tanks, should make my how to thread someday. This rubber plug I use on the filler hole in the pic is a must have for cleaning etc. and I like nuts and bolts to agitate and scrape well.

Usually I can do a tank with one bottle (32oz) of the Works for $1.50 or so,maybe two bottles if I have to repeat the step. The main thing is to first remove any old dryed gas varnish build-up first as the Works does not react with that. The rust must be 'clean' first. The Suzuki tank took me less than 4 hours from start to final resting position after recoating and draining etc..

You mean you have to remove the rust before applying the cream?  Who knew?

About 6 years ago, before I read all the horror stories,  I Kreemed my CB500 tank.  I followed the instructions to the letter with thorough acid cleaning, washing out, MEK rinsing followed by careful drying.  Coated the tank and let it dry as per instructions.  Since the application I have had absolutely no problems.  At the end of the riding season I completely empty the tank.  I really think that the bad name Kreem has is from folks who don't do the job correctly. IMHO

true. the acid typically has to sit a long time.. i let my 'cook' for 3 days easy. never had a lifting problem one one i have lined.. . but i dotn like to like them if possible.. caswells 2-part epoxy liner is awesome though.

HAHA- Yep - King I know you have done a few or more with the 3 bottle fill to top method. But seriously I am not on a Kreeme smear or liner crusade but just reminding for these to work correctly as a couple members have, its all in the prep-prep-prep.   When looking at a used bike with any of these products in the tank look carefully for any signs of rust or a film failure. Once the rust grows under the liner its a cancer that has to be removed.
