Clutch Cover Full Disassembly?

The aluminum engine covers on my 750 have been chromed in the past.  Now the chrome is badly flaking off.  I have found that most of the time it is cheaper to buy used non chromed parts instead of having the originals de-chromed.  This is not the case for the clutch cover for a sand cast as it only has 9 holes to mount instead of 10. 

Which brings me to my question.  I need to fully disassemble the cover before I send it off but it has a center insert that appears to be pressed in see below.  But before I go hammering away I wanted to ask has anyone removed this insert circled in yellow below, and how did you go about it?

Bump.  Any one remove this center piece?  It was definitely removed when it was chromed back in the day.

I'd add 'sandcast' to the title of this thread, and for the most help, I'd take the issue over to the SOOC (sandcast only owners club) forum.

That comes out. I just switched the roller assembly from one clutch cover to another a couple weeks ago. It taps out, but I cannot predict how much force will be needed to remove yours.

You shouldn't need to. On the donor clutch cover that part came out easily. On the recipient the old one took some persuasion.

Cool thanks.  Out of curiosity why was it replaced?  Do they go bad?  How do you know?

I didn't really have a good reason to change mine. I had a clutch cover with a fully functional, but a bit discolored by age, assembly. I had another with a shiny, new-looking assembly. The better cover had the lesser assembly, so I put the shiny one in the nice cover. Like I said, since you can't see it when the clutch is assembled, the switch was pretty pointless, except to use the nicer looking parts.

The butt end of a pin is visiblle. That pin fits into a hole in the cover. It is all friction. Hold the cover with that side pointing down and tap it with a mallet. The piece should just fall out. No effort or heat needed. I've had mine out many times.

Take it out to send cover off for polishing so it doesn't get lost.
