Since the M1 Abrams was mentioned, what about the Bradley Fighting Vehicle? Pretty good runner for it's size and it's weight. It's got room for a crew of people w/ or w/out their weapons. it can be used for movin' and groovin'.

My prefered mode of transportation might be an F4 Phantom w 2 J-79 jet engines but, I guess that would be a little much, huh? One thing about it ,if someone got behind you that you didn't like, Hit the afterburner and they'd be toast!!
                                                Later on, Bill
Bill,

I'll give ya the Bradley, but a Phantom? Yeah it looks cool and all and was a good fighter over 'Nam but the F-14 Tomcat is my fighter of choice, a down and dirty ground pounder as well as a super sonic testosterone factory. If someone gets on your tail in a 'Cat just pull the airbrakes, let em pass under you then drop 'em with the gatling or a sidewinder. Try that in a phantom and there won't be much left to eject from. ;D

Hey, The F-14's no slouch. Main reason I said F-4 was because I was a crew chief on an F-4C Phantom for about 2 years in Japan and I pretty well know my way around it. I do like he Tomcat. Now I have always liked the B-58 Hustler (Delta wing bomber that carries 4 J79 engines similar to what the F-4 and the F-104 used. The F-4C carried sidewinders and a gun could be hung on the centerline under neath. F-4E did the came but, had a built in gun and both could carry a pretty good load of munitions. I also was crew chief on the R-106 Delta Dart (not near as bad as the  Phantom, it was a different class of plane).  After the F-4, I'd go for the F-14. Ever watch Top Gun?     Bill

only about 32 times give or take a bathroom break ;D

My respect just went up for you five fold, I wanted so bad from the time I was six years old to be military but was classed 4F. I had it all planned out, 30 years in, end up an E7 or so, none of that officer crap for me thank you, too much paperwork. Had I been accepted I never would have had my skiing accident and would be a whole person today. :'(

Hey Jeff, sorry to hear about your military plans being sidelined and definitely hate to hear about the skiing accident. Listen, everyone's got a purpose in this world. Sometimes it's hard to see what it is, or to accept it. I had hoped to make E-8 and have 30yrs. As it turned out, I made it to E-7
w/ 29yrs (2yrs inactive and 23 yrs total active & reserve time). I appreciate the respect and like I said we all deserve respect for our part in life. So you see brother, I have respect for you as well. You take care and I'll catch you later.                      Bill

Just thinking out loud: How come that this site, devoted to old, cheap japanese bikes, is full of people craving for sports cars that are mostly European's -Italian's for that matter-? Shouldn't you also own a Ducati, a Morini or a Laverda? I've just seen some mentions to Toyota's sport cars.Raul

In Norway there is a  real dream car ,  it`s  one of kind only:  Ford Granada 700 Boss 1978 mod,It has a 11,5 litre Ford Boss-Engine  whit  1750 brakehorspower     :o :o

Bill, my dad went to work for McDonnell Douglas after working on B-47s in the "Chair Force." He helped build the F-4.  8) Worked mostly on the radar equip. He's full of stories about test pilots, etc. He's even in the background of some of the pics in books about 'em. Being a Navy man myself, I've always preferred the J-model. But they're all among my favorites.

Dusthawk, I don't know if that maneuver was anymore useable in the Tomcat than any other fighter, but with all the smoke pouring out of the F-4's exhaust, nobody would be that close anyway!  :D Ever see the "slot man's" tail when the T-Birds and Blue Angels flew the F-4? They gave up and just painted them black.  ::)

Because both of those have been retired now, I'd have to go with the F/A-18. The new F-22 is cool too but it hasn't grown on me yet.  ;D

BTW, Bill. I saw a red Sunbeam Tiger today! Haven't seen one in years, thought that was funny since we were just talking about them.

Take care guys,
Lee

Rushoid, That's cool that your Dad worked for McDonnell Douglas. I had thoughts of trying
to get a job there after the Air Force. I found out, too late, that I could have gone to night
school and gotten my "license" to qualify me. Then, after I got out , I thought about the
"Spartan School Of Aeronautics and messed around not doing that either. McDonnell Douglas, at
St. Louis, wouldn't have been too far away from Little Rock (where I lived at the time).

Yeah, in full military power (that's what they called it, just before afterburner) did see a lot
of smoke on the F-4 but crewing one gets you kinda close to them (know what I mean?). You
get to know every inch of your plane and going down the intakes, before each flight, wasn't for
the claustrophobic. The F/A-18 is a pretty sharp plane and I don't think I've seen the F-22 yet. is it
a twin engine or a single? I mostly prefer the twin engined planes, myself. On that Sunbeam
Tiger, that must have been pretty neat to see (Not a Ford man but, ya gotta give credit where
      credit's due.).

On the plane subject, Just wanted to say that, while in the Army Reserves & doing my
2wks summer camp at Barksdale AFB, I was able to go up and look a B-52 over up close. I've
always been totally impressed by the bombers and the B-52 is no exception (same family, you
might say, as the B-47).  Better get outta here for now,        Bill

Now the Vista Cruiser is a fine example of American Machinery at it's finest.
Sweet ride..Have any pics... ?

I have a few, but it still under construction and does not look like much.  I'll attach one showing the new glass front end parts during the initial installation.  It's getting a fire breathing 455 in place of the original 330, but from all outward appearances, it will look fairly original.

Bill, it's a twin engine. Here's some info on it: http://www.aerospaceweb.org/aircraft/fighter/f22/

Love the bombers. Just about all of them really. The B-52 is still impressive...especially for an antique!  ;D

Hey Rushoid,

Isn't the F-22 Vstol or even Vtol? I though I read somewhere something about it but I hadn't checked up on it.

Hey Rushoid,

Jeff

Jeff, I just browsed  the link that Rushoid provided and I didn't see anything to indicate that it was.
Check that link, I could have missed something. One thing I didn't miss was the fact that it is 1 Hell of a fighter!! And by the way, in case I didn't mention it, I am a fan of the Countach also. I'd like to take that one for a spin.

Rushoid, that was a great link you put in. I have to tell you that I'm really impressed by what I read when I was just browsing. I will go back and read into it better when I get the chance.

When I was in the Air Force, I really enjoyed being a crew chief and probably would have retired from it except for two things. One thing was, just about as soon as I went in, I was ready to get out and that was on my mind for four years(Getting Out!). The second thing was, the BS that you had to put up with and it just seemed to grow as time went on. So, when my time came, I loaded my 69' road runner with all my belongings and left Hamilton AFB (in Calif) as fast as humanly possible at 9AM. I didn't stop except for gas (got food, drink and a bathroom break at the same time), a 1 hour nap that night about half way across Arizona (Flagstaff, I think) and pulled into Little Rock at about 1 am on the 2nd day (out ran a 442 Olds coming across Arizona). Doesn't seem that long ago but, was in Aug, 1970.                                      Later on, Bill

You guys got some good picks, Abrams, F-4, F-22, B-52, F-14, Bradley, etc, etc, etc, all great toys in their own rite. I myself would go with the P-38 Lightning or the Spruce Goose. Oh wait wasn't the caption "Dream Cars" ?

Yeah, I think some of us kinda got sidetracked, huh? I don't know what happened, the M1A1 was mentioned and it kinda snowballed from there, I think. By the way, what about the P40 Flying Tiger   or the Corsairs (don't remember the model) like the ones on Black Sheep Squadron?

Well, seeing as how I was the one who started the thread and was the second to mention military, I guess it's all right ;D ;D ;D ;D

The military played a big role in my childhood developement and am naturally attracted by any mention of it. I can't seem to shut up sometimes so feel free to tell me to zip it if it gets too ugly. :D

Understand that Jeff, I've got the same problem with that, motorcycles and cars. My mother used to say that I was part machine because, when I was young and lived at home, that was about all I talked or thought about about (cars and motorcycles at that time). So, I know what you're talking about.                                              Later on, Bill

TARKUS, that pretty well sums it up for several of us, myself included.
Kicking in the afterburners on a fighter plane should get a person's attention,
                                                          What do you think?

Yep Bill that's a pretty sight. Kinda reminds me of the flames shootin out the headers of a top fuel dragster at night. nothing like the sight, the sound, and the smell of power.

Bill, you're not gonna believe this: I was stationed at NAS Alameda! I even had my '69 Firebird in long-term storage up at Hamilton. Small world... Of course that was in 1989-92, but still.

I've always had the theory hat if you were interested in one mode of transport, you were interested in just about all of them (planes, trains, automobiles, bikes, etc.). I know I am.  8)

Oh Yeahhh!!  And have you ever seen a AA/Fuel Dragster do a Fire Burnout at night?
Absolutely Awesome!!!  I witnessed that one night a Dragstrip at Prescott, Arkansas and they also
had a Jet car (that was popping the afterburner) that raced the AA/Fueler. Impressive sight, to
       say the least.

Rushoid,  That's too cool!! I was at Hamilton from Dec 69' til' Aug 18th (DISCHARGE
DATE) 1970. That was the day me an old Blue (69' road runner 2dr coupe) left the base for the
last time and headed back to Little Rock, Arkansas. Funny about the coincidences ( Military,
Hamilton AFB, and 69' model car) whoaaa!.

Thank you duster, oh Master of Misc. Information!

Once again, you have come through in the nick of time

Don't ask me what you were in the nick of time for.

I haven't figured that out yet
