daul disc conversion
« on: November 19, 2011, 06:23:06 AM »
Hi guys, wanting to do a dual disc conversion for my CB 750 Honda k7, but to do the conversion you need a CB Honda 500 speedo drive plate, as I see there is no plate but only a chrome cover, they say that you do not use the chrome cover only the plate, can anyone shine some light on this matter, cheers Steve750four.

That was a mistake. The CB500 plate reference is NG. You need a drive plate made a special way. There is someone on the forums making them, I think its in the classifieds.

Actually you can, as i have, cobb one together from the stock part. I ground down the circumference with a bench grinder, leaving enough material at 180° spacing, to bend over with a vice. Once you get into it you'll see what's necessary.

If the member who was making them still does, its a very elegant part. But unseen once its assembled.

This link has the pertinent discussion, shows what you need, has a mention of DIY solutions, and #14 has the link to rangelovs' popular drive that many here have used.

I just read a review online of the duel disc conversion for the CB750 and testing. In the test review I read it said that the performance of the duel disk was not worthwhile because stopping distances were measured that they almost exactly the same for both the single and duel set up. The reason they thought that it was so close was the weight of the extra disc and caliper increased the weight that had to be stopped.
Better performance was achieved with a single disc with better pads, and rotor, and keeping the weight down.

Single stop performance will be limited by the tire. The purpose of the dual disc is repeated stop performance where fade becomes a factor. Also fork stability.

It is overkill for most unmodified streetbikes that aren't ridden aggressively. If you upgrade the tire/rim, you'll get the benefit of the second disc right away. Not only from aggressive riding, but from riding with a heavy load like a fairing, or passenger. Also, the coolness factor should not be discounted.  ;D
