Topic: False Neutral?

Hi all,

I am in the middle of restoring a 1977 CB750 F2 and have just finished the bottom end rebuild up to fitting the gear change shifter assembly after rejoining the crankcase.

I have followed the manual's instructions of testing the gears at this point by rotating the final drive sprocket and changing up and down through all five gears by temporarily attaching the gear pedal.

The problem I have is, that I often get what feels like a neutral between gears above 2nd. The gear shift will firmly locate, but the final drive sprocket runs free and requires a second shift to engage. This seems to be happening all the way up to 5th gear and will often do it on the way down.

Could this be because the engine isn't turning at speed or does this sound like a faulty part or bad assembly?

Do you have the neutral light switch in?

Shouldn't be a running/not running issue I think.

Yes it's in place!

Just checking. The drum can float a little if its not there.

I did mine recently, CB750K2. Shiftied confidently without false neutral. But it is hard to shift a non-moving bike, should be much slower than if running, so give yourself some slack. Steady pressure while moving the sprocket, then it should snick into gear.

Must be something wrong with mine then because it feels solid like when you try to shift up when you're already in fifth gear, but in my case it's free like in neutral?
