La Flama Blanca
1974 CB750 K

New project just hit the garage floor today. Picked it up for $325 but no title. Hopefully I will be able to work something out. Motor appears to be seized as I can't kick it over. No plugs so I sprayed a bunch of Tri-Flow in the chambers to hopefully loosen it up. It shifts all gears like butter though. Scored some original Koni shocks with it so that's cool. Being as it came with bad ass white ghost flames on the side covers and the header is white I figured I would steal Kenny Powers nickname "La Flama Blanca" for a project name.

OK now the pics with questions and comments

The side covers inspiring the name

The VIN tag. build date is 10/1973 (I was born 11/73 sweet!) The VIN is CB750-2320757. Is this a 1973 or 1974?

Motor number

The bike

Rebuildable KONI shocks.

Pretty much all there, rat #$%* and all

Inside the tank is clean as hell but I am thinking maybe the dents are non repairable. Anybody ever fix a tank dent this bad?

PO claims this is a Kerker header. Not sure if it is or not but even so its dented up bad.

If these are the original guages then the milage is at least 63000.

I fixed an LC tank that was that bad. I drilled a couple of holes in it and used coarse thread screws and pulled it out then smoothed the rest with filler.

Looks like a ton of great parts. That rear wheel looks like it is worth what you paid for the whole sha-bang.

Pardon my ignorance but what is special about the rear wheel?

Fill the tank with water and freeze it, that may pop that dent out.

So I've heard and read.......haven't actually tried it myself.
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

Looks like a good buy. That looks to be a K4, but the tank color is Planet Blue, which was available on a K5.
You should try the ATF/acetone trick to "unstuck" the pistons (they may be rusted to the cylinder wall)

Edit:  that seat looks like a K8, have you tried to install?

So today what started as "I just need to put some ATF in the chambers to let them soak for a week" turned into a teardown. I managed to free the stuck cylinders by filling the spark plug holes with ATF and rocking the stator bolt back and forth for a bit. What eventually broke them free was a big screwdriver wedged in one of the slots on the rotor and a big assfull of momentum. Squirted fluid all over the garage floor and into the driveway when she busted loose. After I got them moving again I tore everything off the engine and bike I could. What I am left with is a roller so I can still load it up in the truck for a State Patrol inspection. First step in the no title process.

Yea it was a mess. I should have thought things out a bit better because I am still finding drops of fluid everywhere.

So I have traded a few emails with IKON suspension and sent them pictures of my KONI shocks. Apparently they are to old being from circa 74-75ish and no rebuild parts are available.  Kinda bummed because I thought rebuilding and running these shocks would of been cool as hell. Oh well. Anybody want some old KONI shocks that you cant get parts for?

So I have been thinking on what I want to do with this bike. Last night I was using the grease gun method to free my stuck brake caliper and had an idea when I was cleaning up the mess. I was thinking it might be cool to leave all or most of the parts as is. Just clean everything up, take care of the rust and leave the "patina" that has taken 40 years to accumulate. I would replace all the wearables and clean everything and powdercoat the frame, swingarm, trees, battery box, ect to keep rust at bay. I am thinking it would give the bike some character yet still be cool as hell showing its age. Just a brainstorm.
The parts that inspired my thinking.

Well it's been a while since I have updated but the there has been progress. The bike and engine are completely tore down. I have spent many hours just cleaning, organizing and inspecting everything. I have really been thinking about what my goal is with this build and I have decided I want it to be a streetable hot rod! My initial plan was just clean it up and get it on the road but I have decided that since I have a nice ride with my F3 I will take my time and make this one better. My plan is to keep it stockish with some tasteful mods. No frame tabs will be removed. No frame mods other than a frame kit. I want the tank painted the Japan only market 1974 K4 scheme. Metallic silver with a blue stripe. The engine will be the stock silver with brushed covers. I have so much black on my other build this one needs to be chrome and silver. The motor is going to be done right on this one. Lighted crank and alternator, backcut gears. 836 Kit. MReick headwork. No 5mm conversion or Stage 4 but definately some port and polish. ;)
Here are some pictures!
Cases are blasted and ready to be hot detergent tanked

Got the engine cases blasted and all cleaned up. Spent hours scrubbing the insides to prep them for Glyptal Paint.

I got worn dogs! I took apart most of the transmission today. Everything inspected good except two gears with worn, chipped, and rounded dogs. The high speed bearing (per Hondamans Book) needs to be replaced as well. It makes a bit of noise. I figure I will replace all the bearings just cuz. That means I need to have some bearing grooves cut. Hondaman mentions its pretty common practice at bearing houses. We shall see. I also need a bearing puller to pull the rest of the bearings and take apart the rest of the gear cluster.

High Speed bearing

Bad Dogs. There are only two gears pictured here just different angles of each.
