Here is a way I took my shocks apart when I didn't have an extra set of hands.  Place the shock in the vise right side up.  Run the tie straps through the spring then back through the ratchet.  Ratchet them down equally as far as you can.  Sometimes you may need to push the spring down a little more to get the shims out. I had to in my case since the covers prevented me from compressing more of the spring.

Perhaps this will help somebody someday. Thread rod, old dicing board, a hole saw and a vice grip. Ignore the zip ties in the pix, bad idea that failed.

I used a holder for top of shock that goes in the drill press.. Now I built an even slicker setup that goes in the lathe.

 If you have Harley buddies, or can find. At a swap meet, big twin clutch plates, and the reddi rod should do it easily..
