annunciator delete, gauge change, How to??
« on: May 31, 2013, 06:26:13 AM »
can I switch out my 550 gauges for the ones used on the 750's?
I want to get rid of the idiot-light cluster so I can mount my phone/GPS right in the middle, and I think the 750s have the lights built into the gauge
Also, how do I disconnect the turn signal annunciator because it draws too much current at idle.
Thanks

They're (gauges are) the same size, but check on tach/speedo ratios first.  The buzzer disconnects from the harness in the headlight bucket and you can just pull it off the bike then.

I'm sure the RATIO is the same for all HONDAS. The T/S buzzer can  just be disconnected. It only has 2 wires with bullet connectors about 3" from the buzzer.

Nope.  The tachometer ratio is different between 500/550's and 750's.  Speedometer drive ratio is the same.

Take the buzzer off or disconnect brown/blue in bucket

The buzzer seems to die off after 15 seconds at the light unless I rev the bike past 3k RPM. I really only need the neutral light. Any one know if that is included on the speedo? That way, I just need to change out the speedo and keep the tach ( I could just wire it up, but it would be nice to have it labeled correctly)

Neutral is in the tach and your buzzer is dying at low rpm because you're not charging below, like, 2000 rpm on these bikes... voltage is just getting low enough to not fully power all the lights and buzzers and such.  It's pretty common if your battery is not charged up fully proper.

That's what I use as the bikes voltmeter!  Buzzer stops as the battery volts fall.  Increase RPM to put the energy back into the battery.  Buzzer doesn't draw much power at all.
It's funny you want to eliminate the symptom rather than the cause.
"Doc, it hurts when I do this."  "Well, don't do that!"  ;D

Cb750 Tachometers have a different ratio than 550 tachometers.  I used one for years, never could get the needle to red line.  Even though I tried frequently.  Poor motor.  I still don't know exactly why it didn't fly apart.  Robust little motor, that.  Probably why it could use new rings. ::)

As to the CB750 idiot lights: only the K0 and K1 have the lights in the gauge. Then they switched to the cluster on the barclamps.

Since the in gauge style is truly rare, good ones go for more than you would want to pay, probably.

Besides the drive ratios.

There are places that sell aftermarket gauges with integrated idiot lights that have the proper ratio like Dime City Cycles. I believe the 500/550 have a 1:7 ratio.

Alternatively, (and I hate to plug my own stuff but...) you could just relocate the bulbs somewhere else on the bike using something like the 3mm LED pilot lights I make:

I am sure that is not correct. But you are correct about just unpluging it however it will tell you your voltage is low and like TT said that can be a tool.

I'm sure my charging system is weak. I just put the battery on a trickle charger couple of days a week  and she starts right up whenever I need her to. I'll have to tackle that issue after the summer, along with a new chain, change the fork seals, and various other maintenance items. I'm just glad the carbs, tranny, and engine work well. The rest of the stuff I can deal with.
