Bugger.

So today I pulled the carbies off, cleaned the bowls, cleaned the slow jets and got it all back together by lunchtime.



Started the bike, adjusted the idle and got it sitting there just purring away.

Then it died.

And then it would not start unless it had full throttle and was roaring - any less and it just dies.

So - I will check fuel flow (again) even though both petcock lines were running freely  when I drained the tank.

I will pull the plugs and pop in new ones - other than that I think it is time to send it off to the professionals.

Did you pull the float valves and set the float levels too? Sounds as though they're sticking shut. But that shouldn't be cured by throttle action... ???

Yep - checked float valves, all swinging freely and all at 22mm.

I am going to change my fuel lines, I am using 1/4" ID vacuum hose and that my be restricting the flow. I have some clear line coming

Hands up who has fallen for the 'non breathing fuel cap' as the reason their bike would run for a bit and then stall and fail to run?

i have done tons of times.
.on my autboard suzuki..vith separate tank..and air schrev in the fuel cap..sailed aut and the engine dies..
i kan not speak english/but trying!!

Yep.

So now having realised that I have a fuel delivery system dependant upon gravity and unable to work in a vacuum, tonight I will be attempting to breathe life back into the fuel cap.

If I cannot resuscitate, then I will replace it.

Okay, pulled the guts out of the fuel cap and cleaned the breather.

Put it back together and went for a ride - all good.

Left it to idle for 10 minutes with the cap closed - all good.

Noticed my rubber (poor choice) vacuum hose for fuel line had turned very soft and spongy - not good.

So I pulled the carbs off (I am getting good at that) and fitted proper (from eBay so it must be proper) clear fuel line.

Fitted everything back on and went for a ride - all good.

Sat and idled for ten minutes - all good.

Noticed that only one line had fuel in it - concerned.

I mean, how come the bike was idling nice and running on four (as far as I could tell) and yet I could only see one line with fuel in it?

So I turned to the best place for answers (Google) which took me straight to many SOHC4 forum threads.

Only one will flow at any given time.  If you wish to test that theory, block the flowing one and watch as the nonflowing one picks up where it left off.  This is normal and is how the needles are fed in operation.


So - is this correct? Will the line providing fuel vary with the operation of the carburettors?

Do I need to worry about this?

Do I need to find a warm soft cell and have a little holiday now that I own a CB500?

The bike is running okay (needs a carb balance) and I am ready to enjoy the Melbourne late summer and autumn with some "getting to know you" CB500 riding.

So thanks to everyone who posted there with helpful advice along the way - could not have done it without you.

Fettling in and enjoying the ride.

I have a new set of plugs and plug caps to install and a proper Honda NOS spark plug wrench on its way so I can do the job.

Meanwhile - who has a preferred supplier for CB500F electronic ignitions? I would like to ditch the points soon.

Thanks, I had a Pamco in the CB450 and it worked a treat so I will probably go with Pete's good work again.

What a great day tinkering on the CB500.

I got some changeover parts from Wowbagger so I swapped over the side covers and tappet covers, pretty easy.

Then whilst I had the tank off, I fitted the new plugs and the new NGK plug caps.

Then I decided to make myself a cafe seat pan out of the rear of a CL175 tank I had cut up a while back.









Looks a bit different now.



And then I decided to fit clubman's.



All I need to do tomorrow is get some foam for the seat, and then eventually get it upholstered. I will get the seat upholstery to cover the rivets and the seat pan sides, so it will all look neat.

They are cheap bar end mirrors off eBay that I modified to fit the stock mirror mounts - thanks.
