Electrical Help needed 76 CB550
« on: November 15, 2006, 06:52:41 PM »
I just ran the wires into my new clubman bars and am reattaching the wires.  They look pretty sweet, but right now turn signals light up, but do not blink when activated.  When right or left is switched, the lights on the corresponding side turn off, and I hear the faintest of audible tones from the turn signal buzzer.  In addition, the headlight does not come on (fuse was checked, and is good).  Tach and speedo lights are working, as are neutral and oil lights.  Horn is functioning fine.  The wiring diagram in my Clymers manual I have shows some slightly different color combos (no black w/red wire, etc), but they do have a corresponding wire to connect to, so I was not worried.  What I do have is one BLK connector coming from the back of the headlamp with nothing going into it, and a brown wire as well.  I have NO spare wires, and no solid brown wire to match up with the female connection.
I am not an electrician, and could use any and all assistance in tracing down the problem.  I have begun highlighting all known good connections, but I really am getting frustrated after looking at this mess for two days.

The brown wire doesn't connect to anything! If you look at the diagram you should see that it just runs from the back brake light up to the front and terminates. I have no idea why... ::), but thats how it was on my bike. The black wire on the other hand is power, and I would be willing to bet why your headlight doesn't work. Unlike most vehicles I'm familiar with Honda used black for power and green for ground. I had the same problem with my bike, turned out to be the grounds for the turn signals. I'd start with the ground wires and then move to the flasher relay...

Black is indeed the power connection - switched through the ignition switch.  This is to differentiate it from the red which is unswitched from the battery.

Thanks for the help, I'll give it a try this afternoon and let you know.  This site is a sanity saver sometimes.
