Best Cafe Racer Seat for a 1973 CB750
« on: August 27, 2016, 08:12:06 am »
I am looking for a more compact seat for my 1973 CB750.  The frame is uncut but I am considering adding a flat hoop at the back of the frame.

I just feel that the original seat design is a tad large for my taste.  It is certainly comfortable; but, I think a lower profile would look more contemporary.

Opinions and product referrals welcomed!

Why not make your own? Get a plate of steel or aluminum, or buy a Brat pan from Dime City Cycles, shape some marine grade foam, and have it upholstered locally for under $100.00. That's what I did, and I'm happy with the results.

Ginger Mccabe from New Church Moto. Out of Bandon, Oregon.

She only does the upholstery part. You'd have to fabricate your own seat pan and send it to her. $300. She supplies the leather.

Did you use the original cover?  Did you cut the seat foam yourself... electric caving knife?

If you feel ambitious, you can build from scratch using basic fibreglass techniques.

A little Bondo fill and lots of sanding.

Here's the final seat plug complete with half round ribs for a flex free seat.
Once the production mold is made; carbon fiber copies will be easy.

The seat was professionally done creating a new lower profile cover and foam for the original seat pan.

Obviously... if I use the same seat pan.

I also have a 1976 VB550 Super Sport.  I recovered the seat myself with a cover purchased on Ebay.  The CB550F seat is more to my liking.  It is a little lower in profile and narrower.

I am thinking about cutting down the foam in the CB750 seat to approximate the size and form of the CB550F.  And then buy another CB550F seat cover.  Anyone want to talk me out of this?

Firstly. The title says "Best Cafe Racer Seat" and a thinned down stock plank is nary a Cafe Racer seat. Secondly. Attempting to fit a 550 cover over an inaccurately shaved 750 seat pan/foam is a stretch. Pun intended.

Yeah... you're right.  Sometimes a thread goes far afield from the original topic.

Do you have a suggestion on what would be the 'Best Cafe Racer Seat' for a 1973 CB750?
