Fuel cap pins,removal and install?

Hi gang! I have Yamiya repop fuel tank that the previous owner installed a crappy cap/lid on it and I want to install a better one on it. And, I don't want to damage the tank of course. How have you removed the front pin, just driven it out? Or drilled it out? My drill chuck is not long enough to go straight in and clear the tank. I have a long screw and acorn nut to replace it with that I got from Hondaman a long time ago. If I opt to get   a new Honda pin how did you flair the end of it?

 You only need to drill the flare on the end, then the pin will push out. I also got the bolt and nut from Mark.
  I flared one with a punch and a buck on the other end. I tried a c clamp and ball bearing too. My clamp was too weak.

You can get longer drill bits. 6" and 12"

if its the same pin on early 500/550s ive left the flared end intact and just using a correct size punch just knock it through and reuse that pin flaring it back again with a centre punch and care?

I use my Home Depot Drill extension that has the end you can flip from screw driver to drill bit. It’s about 6” long. Also, cut the side out of a windshield washer fluid tin (flat plastic) and tape it to the tank as a shield!

+1....same here.

And I put two layers of painters tape in the area on the tank while working on it to prevent any damage in the event of slip up.

[On a tank that needed paint and relining, for starters...] I've used the finishing nail, too, to tap out the old pin. It was in too bad of shape to re-use, which was how those 'hinge pin kits' got started.

Which reminds me: maybe someone is making the 1-1/8" #4-40 screws in 18-8 or 303 stainless again, I should look around? I still have lots of the little acorn nuts.

Thanks guys, I used all your tips. I layered up the old tank with much painters tape, took a deep breath and had at it. The old tank was in good condition but already had a couple of dings in it near the good fuel cap. I started out with a phillips screw driver that fit the end of the pin quite nicely, a few taps with that and the pin started to move, then went to a smaller screw driver which pushed it through the side of the cap mount. Next I used an automatic spring punch to get it further along then a longer shaft,  narrower spring punch to move it further. A pair of needle nose pliers helped pull the pin out all the way.
Now,on the the perfect Yamiya repop tank. Again layered it in painters tape in prep to pop the pin out on this one. However, the previous owner had just pushed a used pin in and it came out without a fuss.Whew! I had a couple of Mark's long screw and cap nut kits so I used one of them. I didn't want to get near the tanks with a stock pin and flairing tools.
Mark, if you ever make the pin kits with the teeny tiny allen head screw ends, put me down for a couple of them please. They look great.
On a side note, the smaller auto spring punch is great for removing stuck float pins. Just be prepared to catch the pin as it shoots out of the pin holes. I lost one for 6 months in my shop. Good thing I had a spare.
Now the tank looks great with a shiny fuel cap it deserved. And, no dings.

I like the original cap latch over the locking one, no matter how much of a risk Honda thought it was!

Not a fan of the acorn nut tbh, there are some pins sets on ebay which use horseclips instead. They are unobtrusive in comparison

That's a good idea! They are usually prettier than the crosspoint screw heads, too. I'll look around. The material must be stainless steel to prevent sparking issues. The OEM pins were a tin-aluminum alloy that didn't spark.

If "rebated"means is there a slot in the pin at one end the answer is yes. The clip goes in the slot. The OEM is a rivet. Cliff.
