I am rebuilding my 78 CB750K and the PO (or POS at this point) stripped out the bolt for the oil filter. It was one of the old 4 sided 10 or 12mm ones, so I get how it happened, but how the %^$^ do I get it out now? I tried to grind and cut around the outside of the base of the head since the actual head is non existant with no luck. Now I have basically a flat front with a tic tac toe board ground into it, and the outer parts will not chisel off, I had hoped I could cut around the central shaft, pull the housing off and channel lock the shaft of the bolt off, but no go. I stopped with the angle grinder before I cut into the housing, and I am now contemplating either drilling the center and easy-out-ing it, or getting my hi torque 1/4" drill and a 1" countersink bit to just grind her down till I can pull the filter housing. Any suggestions?
I would prefer to keep the stock filter housing intact, since I have replacement bolts and filters, at least untill Terry kicks up production of the screw on adapters again, but I guess I could hack it up and get an Ebay replacement in the meantime.

drill a big enough hole in the oil bolt, then jam that ezy-out in the little mo fo, then use some coarse language as you scrape your knuckles trying to get the little sod out..

also gently heat up the oil filter housing.... very gently...... then try giving the  ezy out some gut busting wrenches....

my last little 12mm oil bolt was siezed up very well - just nipped up when oil changed and new o ring installed but it still locked up real tight..... now I have a large oil bolt in there, maybe less grief next time...

weld a bigger nut to whats left of the old nut ;), cheers mick.

I had the same problem with my 77' 750. The PO mangulated the hell out of it, and it wouldn't budge...I tried everything...grinding down 2 sides, and using a big crescent wrench, grinding a slot, and an impact driver, a big hole in the center, and a big f-n' ezout, nothing worked! I ended up using my angle grinder to totally grind down the head of the bolt past the edges that push against the filter housing, in turn ruining my filter housing, but the filter housing then just slid off and the bolt came out easily then. I didn't want to destroy the housing but I had already ordered a oil filter adapter anyway, so...you can find a stock filter housing on e-bay for a few bucks. Good luck

I battled with mine as well.

The PO had welded a nut to the outside of the bolt.  That broke off on me.  No matter what I couldn't get the damned thing off.  So I patiently drilled the bolt back thinking I was going to save my housing...

About an hour later without nearly enough progress was being made so I went in for lunch and started to search this board.  Many of us it seems have had similar troubles.  I did a quick search on Ebay and found 2 that no one had bid on which were $10.00.  I knew I had one in the garage which came with a spare motor as well so I figured the hell with it and got out my reciprocating saw.  The result was very satisfying.

Go buy a housing and bolt on Ebay and hack the thing off.

You can't make too much popcorn, but you can definately eat too much popcorn.

Here is what mine looked like before I broke out the grinder.  The bolt was round.  I tried sockets at first and that didnt work so I switched to vice grips and that didnt work.  So out came the grinder.  I ground off the bolt head and put the grinder perpendicular to the flat part of the bolt head and cut a notch like a flat head screwdriver, then got a big screw driver and it came right off.  I had to replace my oil filter housing but I had to get that off to take the motor out.  Anyways best of luck to you.

Cheep part, just get it out of the motor and hit ebay for the new parts or ask around the Forum.
Dont wast a days work on $10 or $20 worth of parts.

Same thing happened to my oil filetr bolt, question there is the bolt and a larger washer, are they supposed to be attached to each other? Basically is the bolt attached to the washer or is it one piece that comes out?

Large washer is integral to the bolt, Which by the way is not simply a bolt.  It is part of the filter plumbing, with ports and valving built in.  I made the change to a 17mm head size many years ago and have been thankful ever since.  They are much more durable and easy to use.  When you go to replace the stock bolt see if you can locate the larger size head.  Just be careful not to over torque it when tighting it down as it would be easy to do.

Same thing...

I was able to get some big vise grips on the very edges of the bolt (the head was gone), put some counter clockwise pressure on it and kept beating the head with a hammer until it started to turn...

Weld a socket to it and leave it there, you wont easily strip the 3/8 square hole..

And... once you get it off and are about to tighten down your new oil filter: put some anti-seize on the bolt - smear it around on the outside from the "washer" face to the little O-ring. This is the only bit of it that isn't in an oil bath and the only bit that seizes.

Got it off finally, welded a new nut to it and after quite a few choice words it came off

MMMMm anti- seize, i think anti seize is a good thing for all bolts but, the bolt is chrome and if i remember correctly so are the threads. The best thing is to make sure u use a torque wrench.
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.
