Since starting my new job i have taken on the nick-name "Weird Beard" and have actually embraced it. When i joined this forum, not knowing how good it really is, I just typed the first thing that came to me I didn't know I would stay. I have joined other forums before but this is the only one I went come back to.

I know I can change my screen name but is it a good idea? Will it confuse people? I know I'm not as well known around here as say Hondaman, but I have had seen my name come up before in other peoples posts. I try to stay active in the forum. Changing my screen name I loose my identity right? In reality that is the only way we know each other.

What are your thoughts on it?

Is there a way to transition into a new screen name?

Has it been done before?

I tend to recognize people by avatars instead of nicknames. Everytime somebody changes his avatar, I'm lost about him.

In fact it is Raúl but as you english-speaking people get confused by strange script signs as "¿" or "¿" or strange letters such as "ñ" as in "España" -Spain-, I decided to keep it simple. BTW, I didn't know my dad had a brother named "Ernesto"....  ;D

Some forums doesn't allow to change the nicknames, not even the administrators. I don't know about this one, but I'm pretty sure the administrators are not willing to be changing names of people whenever the mood change.

In another forum that I belonged to -still do but don't post- I wanted to change my nickname. The shortest way was to open a new account. I just let everybody know what I was doing so my computer friends knew who the new guy was. It meant losing the post count but I don't care about that any longer. Quantity and quality are seldom united. For the same reason I don't change the avatar. If sometimes you want to "feel special" I think it is better to put your cool avatar in your signature, and leave your main avatar alone. When people talk without seeing their faces, avatars are the only way to "remember faces".

Is there a way to transition into a new screen name?

Has it been done before?

answers to your questions...yes and yes...it has been done before..I know becuase i have done it...when i first joined this forum i initially joined it with the name Outlawz24 due to being the owner of a 1st gen Cavalier z24 at the time. After i sold the z i decided to avoid names linked to what ever vehicle i have at the time...but anyways there is a way to transition from one name to the new one and keep your post count intact...your avatar will not change either...Click on profile, then click on account related settings at the top it shows your username and Name...fill in whatever you like in name and save it...to log in you just use your current username...

As DR says, you can change the displayed name to anything you like but cannot change your original "Username" (for example the "1981CB650C" bit).

How would we recognize you?  Are you entering the Witness Protection Plan?  If so, telling us probably wasn't the best idea.

Changing your forum name shortly after changing your avatar picture is a good way of ensuring that few people know who you are.

What's the story behind "Weird Beard?" Did you dye it? Braid it? Grow really patchy?

How about transitioning for a while -  Weird Beard Canuck - say 1 year then fully transition.

I am referred to as Drug Man in one of the bike shops I used to frequent before moving. My real biker name. Got that name by the owner the first time he found out I am a pharmacist. You can imagine what conversations that brought up. I decided to be clean and go with Rxman instead.
