I think some guys heat them, bend them over about half way down, and then unscrew it

My average is two seized studs per case which I eventually break off flush!  I find the best solution is to weld a nut to it. Spray some water on the stud to cool somewhat and they usually come right out. The heating/cooling will loosen the threads, some of which seem to have loctite. If you absolutely can't get it to budge, I'd suggest cutting it all off but 1/4" and trying the above

No offence but I have poor luck with bloody ez outs.

No offense taken.

I tend to approach things differently. EZ outs are the easiest things for me to get in a small drilled out tube.

You have a better suggestion? I'm always looking for an EZier way.

Thanks, y'all. Been out of town for a few days but I left the stud soaking in Kroil (if I haven't said it yet, "All Hail KROIL"). Seen the bent over stud strategy and I'm nervous about an ez out (tho I've had success elsewhere with these) since the thing is half put back together already. I will say I'm being pretty ginger with it as breaking it off is the last thing I want to do at this point.

I'll post progress when there's some to be had...

Yea, I'm not going to replace that stud. Everything fits together as it is, it's only about 1-2mm off but I can still get it through the block/head and it looks fine to receive a nut. Pressing on...

Started with head yesterday and was looking at the R/D valve spring kit. The kit comes with cups/shims rather than two spring seats. Not sure what combo I'm suppose to use but I did try to follow their directions for checking installed spring height. Ran out of time after checking the first one, though.

I'm going to call R/D later to see what they recommend...

Got the head together with some assistance from R/D on how to use their kit. The cups replace the stock spring seats and installed height was in range without any shims, so....next up is to check piston to valve clearance. Not much extra free time right now...did I mention I'm renovating two houses, starting a business and moving all at the same time? I'm just glad I've got the Ocho to ride here and there while this thing comes together.

I'm ashamed as hell to admit I busted one of the bleedin' rings fitting the cylinders. Can you say F-N-G? The process kind of reminded me of sex with my wife: trying too much, going too fast and ultimately ending with feelings of embarassment, guilt and shame...

A little good news to report, finally got another crack at the cylinders and got it right this time. Even had no trouble getting the cam/chain assembly together. Watching the cam turn though, shows barely ANY clearnce at all between cam lobe and the housing (right term??)...I mean, nothing's rubbing but it just barely clears. I am going to try to get the rest of it buttoned up tonight.

Oh yeah, the rental place is done, I finished the bathroom remodel on the house I'm selling and we start construction on my business location next week. Not much going on, really...

I had the same problem when I put in my Cycle-X 850 kit (not with my wife  ;) ). Only that was during the time when no one was able to get a hold of anyone at Cycle-X. I had no source for new rings. Took a while, but I finally found some.

I remember that, only thing coming up was ATV or snowmobile rings, right? What bore size is it?

Stayed up really late last night trying to get her finished and was (more or less) successful. Two items of note: first, I really like the stainless cycle bolt set but it sucks for the head. A couple bolts are not quite right and all but one of the tappet covers were getting hung up on on the hex head bolts; second, I've got to figure out the barnett set-up, how far do I torque the springs? The actuating lever seems really stiff, like rock hard. I think I've got it back together right but further info is needed.

But, those small items aside, it is together and turns over easy...I am at least stoked about that!

I run barnett HD springs, and the lever #$%*ing kills my wrist. I installed them when my 550 had slippage issues, but never tried running the stock springs with the 650 clutch basket. In theory, the reduced ratio between it and the primary should ease the strain on the clutch. I'll likely try the stock 650 springs and see how that feels/works.

The motor is back together, at last. Finished yesterday morning and had to load everything up to bring down here to Iowa. So, in addition to all of the tools and crap from my house in St Paul, I had to carry up from the basement 1) complete 550 motor, 1) 750 K0 motor split, 1) 650 head and carbs 2) sets of forks and numerous other bits...Unloaded the motor into the shop down here and it looks really nice sitting next to the frame. Will look much better when it's in the frame.

So, next on the list is to finish the fork re-build, re-jet the 550 carbs (I'm gonna hold the 650 carbs in reserve but, as they need to be cleaned, will try my shiny, happy 550 carbs), put Progressive shocks together and address the wheels. Undecided on re-spoking the wheels but I think I'm leaning in that direction. Nice and shiny will be good (and straight is a bonus).

As far as brakes I have the 750 rotor and caliper, but I want to settle on a new master. Still waiting on my bud in AZ for the fuel tank paint.

I need some bars. And a chain. And a seat.

But aside from that, it's nearly done, right? Right...

I started to polish a little and then stopped, not only because it's a pain in the ass, but also because I thought it looked more like the "low budget" build it started out as...so there's some rough edges and a couple scratches here and there, what I like to refer to as "natural variety"...

I just hope it doesn't blow up, catch on fire and fall out of the frame. But then again, that certainly would add some more character...

Thanks for the encouragement. In all fairness to myself, considering everything I've got going on right now, I'm amazed I've done as much as I have. It's nice that I have The Ocho to ride when I really feel the need...

Dows, forty-six miles north of Ames off 35. Small town where my wife grew up. Her folks have a nice place (farm) where we will eventually build our house. I'm opening a restaurant in Ames in September.
