What not to use to attach your grips!
« on: May 02, 2009, 04:07:35 AM »
I replaced the grips on my CB500 last year when I bought it, as the ones that came with it were trashed. Having never replaced grips before, I bought some of the grip glue, but it takes 24 hours to set up before you can ride. I wanted to ride sooner than that, so I searched the internet. I found two options that were highly suggested, the first being hairspray ( I didn't have any handy at the time) the other being liquid soap. I went with the liquid soap, and it seemed to work pretty well. On hot days my throttle grip would twist a bit, but nothing major. It lasted all this time, but then again I never rode her in the rain, and always had her covered when it rained. Yesterday I rode her in the rain, she sat in the rain, and this morning when I went to leave for work...... what the, why won't she rev when I twist the throttle??? Took a sec, but finally registered that the grip was spinning freely on the throttle tube. Well, fortunately I figured this out before going anywhere and subsequently crashing because my grips fell off  >:(   So from this I have decided that soap is a terrible grip glue.

I'm now torn, do I use grip glue, or is hair spray really the way to go? I like the idea of spraying it on and having it stuck in 10 mins, vs the 24 hrs for the grip glue. Whats the verdict guys??

Thanks,

Brandon

Suck it up and don't ride it for a day.  :P

Do it right (grip glue) because you don't want it coming off at some unexpected time.

I'm no expert.

For conversation's sake, would rubbing alcohol work?

Hair spray.  It's mostly alcohol, which helps the grips slip on, and then it evaporates quickly leaving just the sticky stuff behind to hold the grips in place.  I use it on all of my bikes and have never had any issues with them coming loose until I want them to.

I used hairspray and always did on bicycles. It works really well. I'm 275 lbs and I was riding street bmx for a while again and always used hairspray with no slippage. Dollar General has it CHEAP and a can will last longer that you can imagine, unless your just installing grips all day.

All I have used so far on motorcycle grips is hairspray.

I spray the bar first with a generous amount and let dry. (2-3 hrs)
Then I spray the inside of the grips, and put them on.
I still wait 24hours though.
Probably not needed, but I wait just in case.
Never had one slip off (yet) so i'm sticking with hairspray until I have a slipping problem with the grips.
I have rode 3 times in heavy rain, and have yet to have either the throttle or the clutch side grip slip t all.

But as others here have said, grip glue is the bomb, I have heard this at motorcycle shops as well.
I'm just too cheap to spring the $5.00 for it.

+1 on the hairspray.  In my BMX days we preferred Aquanet.

If you want 100% certainty, though, use grip glue.  Hard to go wrong with that route.

A little JB weld would fix that right up, eh?   ;)

IMO I think grip glue is over kill... If you ever wanna remove them again at any point save yourself some head ache
and use some hair spray it holds fine.

ev0lution7 did you post about your spill after this? I read one on here a while ago and when I realized what was going on, thought of that post and realized I was pretty lucky.

Guess I'll spring for the glue. I have a hard time believing that so many people could be wrong about the hairspray, but at the same time, it's my hide if I am. Besides, if I replace the grips, I'll just replace the bars, with some nice clubmans to go with the rest of the cafe look I'll eventually do on her  ;D

Thanks all,

Brandon

firstly, if the grips are loose enough to slip right off while riding... you should invest in different grips... they are not fitting properly.
grips should stay on by themselves for the most part.  they should be very difficult to put on unless you're using grip glue, hairspray or something similar.  once the glue has set, they should be very difficult to even twist much less move up and down on the bar.

i use hairspray... never had a problem.
glue is too gunky and leaves stuff on the bars... i don't like that.  makes it too difficult to change grips easily.
hairspray is water soluble tho... so it may need to be done every so often... not a big deal when the grips aren't permanently glued.
compressed air is a wonderful tool.   ;)

I guess I’ll go against popular opinion again!  ;D

I’ve always used spray paint! Used it on mountain bikes and motorcycles alike.
Spray it in the grip (with a rag over the open end) and slip it on quickly.
Be sure not to allow it to drip out the open end of the grips and onto the bike, let stand for a ½ hour and go have fun.

This stuff never re-emulsifies in the rain and grips can be remover by spraying a little WD-40 under them and worked around with a small scribe.

Every GOOD garage has some spray paint on the shelf.

Cheers

I gotta wonder...short of some angled down clubmans or Clip ons....

How much torque ya have to put on the grip to get it to come off.....

I suppose the angle of the grip would play a big part in what to use...

Standard bars...I just slip them on and go....theres never enough pressure on them to slide one off...

If they were angled down and I was supporting Body weight on the grips...well...I think the Glue would be the way to go.

Big difference if you will between the "Sit up and beg" of a 70's vintage bike...as compared to say a R1 or a CBR600 etc...

If ya think about it....
