Project 13 CB400F. Now putting on the miles...
« on: September 15, 2009, 07:12:58 AM »
Hey guys this is the newest project in my shop.

These pictures are "just off the truck".

The rack and the R90S fairing are the first to come off. (Ebay)

The wheels are EPM magnesium. The rear disc conversion is a Brembo Kit. Shocks are Konis.

The whole bike was built this way in aprox 1976-1977. The bike is a October 1974 build.

One owner, 11K on the bike.

More pics to follow as Removal and build continues.

LOL, dude ALL bikes NEED something!

I have a Yoshima pipe, ATK modified swing arm and some other interesting vintage speed bits. It will eventually get them all.

But yes, it is in pretty nice condition, just needs a detailing.

OK the rack was removed less than 2 hours after the bike came home!

The Fairing is an ORIGINAL un-molested BMW R90S fairing. The clock and voltmeter are hooked up and they both WORK!

There are restored R90Sssss that have clocks that don't work, lol.

The original wheel brochure was included along with some other nice stuff. Check out the brochure.

Thanks the work is really just starting...

The following pics are of the bike (now called 13 or Lucky 13 because it is the 13th bike to come and stay in my new shop!)

I got the fairing removed and listed on ebay. I pulled the rear rack off.

Unfortunately while removing the fairing I managed to pull the orange/white wire out of the turn signal socket!!!! %!@$@##!%! Oh man I cursed up a storm.  Fortunately I have a box of "electrical" parts from past projects and I had another wire with the proper mushroom head to slip back into the socket. Always take your time!

So if it wasnt obvious this 400 wears a CB750K headlight bucket and Flat lens H4 headlight. I like the look and it is brighter... But I have to think too much city riding with the even the low beam on is going to start sucking the batery dry. I have heard there is a lower wattage H4 bulb out there and I am going to do a little research and try to find it.

The mirrors are not stock but they dont bother me at the moment. I have the originals packed away along with the mint stock wheels and some other bits. This one even came with a bottle of factory touch up paint.

The carbs will be comming off in the next day or two as it is not quite running right and I am sure the jets and emulsion tubes have some issues.

I hate removing 400 carbs especially on a bike as nice as this one...Hard to make sure you don't scratch anything.

I will keep posting as long as anyone cares!  LOL

Have a good one!

Elitist? Not me I have bikes with all numbers of cams and valves!

Re. re-jetting. For now I am only going to clean and tune. I have a vintage early Yoshimura pipe that will be installed and tuned later this fall.

I cannot wait to hear that one rip.

OK, the bike ran but not like it should. I knew I would have to clean the jets...

SO here it goes. With pictures even!

I have done many sets of 400 carbs in the past. So I am getting pretty good at it but a fellow Honda freak friend of mine had a great tip that he picked up somewhere. Check out the third hand that held the airbox completely out of the way to expiditeremoving the carb set!

So;

Remove the tank and side panels. 3 less items to worry about damaging.

Romove the cables and loosen all your hose clamps. Make sure you loosen them all the way. Push the engine clamps as close to the head as you can.

Undo the vents and make sure you know where everything is routed.

THis is the part YOU must do if you want to cut your swearing by 99%. After the clamps are loose use a tie down strap to pull the airbox back. Attach the strap to the rear of the bike after you loop it over the top of the intake rubbers. Once it is pulled back REMOVE your hose clamps before you do any thing else. If you do not remove the clamps you will mangle them and possiably scratch your engine paint or other stuff you do not want to damage.

Undo the cables.

Pull the carbs. (you removed the vents right?)

These were not NASTY by any means but the jets needed a good cleaning. I will not be taking these all the way apart as they function well as is.

Not to bad inside, Ihave seen much fuzzier and greener...and sometimes white? Yuck!

Do not forget to make sure your nipples are clean... The end is spring loaded make sure it is not stuck!

This was the carb that was giving me trouble. Not that much different than the rest . But it only takes one tiny piece-o-crap to mes up a sweet running ride.

Take a break from the carb cleaner fumes and detail the hard to reach bits. Much easier to wipe it now than after it is reassembled. I always lay down a nice coat of wax to protect the finish.

Every thing ihas been removed and was cleaned rinsed and rinsed again. Now its ready to go back together.

Don't forget and little or BIG parts... At this point I forgot to install the floats in the second carb...

I lubed all the linkages everything is SMOOOOTH. THe set is ready to put back in!

Slide the carbs back in from the RIGHT SIDE. push them into the head first. REMEMBER to put your airbox clamps back on BEFORE you push the airbox back onto the carbs. Tighten all the clamps and reinstall your vent tubes and breather hose.

Buttoned back up!

I turned on the fuel, kicked it over two times with kill off. I switched it back on and it fired up on the next kick. Smooth as silk with no fiddeling it sat at 1400. I have it set now at aprox 900-1000 rpm and you can hardly hear it.

PS look closely the idiot dash still has its protective plastic coating...Who doesnt remove that when they first get a bike?

I took it out for a little ride...It ended up being 50+ miles and the little bugger really rips now.

Next time it will be valves and points!

Ok I know this thread might have gone a little stale but I just got back into Project 13 so I will be posting more (and better) sorry about the photo quality I forgot the camera...

Here 13 is strapped to the lift and getting ready for a detail, brake rebuild and general sorting.

The front is a stock honda brake. The rear set up is Brembo. The wheels are EPM.

This bike is in such nice shape it has been a pleasure to work on it. Everything has been comming apart just like it should. No striped or broken bolts (knock on wood).

Caliper is all clean and ready to go but the fork needs detailing and I might as well lube the brake arm while I am in there. ALWAYS check the brake arm on these things otherwise your caliper rebuild is a waste of time! It should swing freely and have minimal play.

Removal and cleaning is pretty straight forward. I use an alcohol based brake cleaner that is kind to paint and rubber. Make sure the piston seal seat is SUPER clean. Crud build up in this area is what causes the piston to stick. If your swing arm is sticky and your piston doesnt move you will have problems.

I reassemble using Silicone brake grease. Honda used this product not only as a lube but also as a seal to keep crud from getting to the rubber seal in the first place. I use anti-sieze on all threaded parts to ease maintenance in the future.

13 has not officially seen the road since 1985. OK it did see a little road time just before the snow when I got it back to Minnesota!

A little bit of vintage bling. These are EPM wheels straight from Italy. The previous owner knew the Ducatti race director who offered to bring in a set for the 400F. I will have more pictures of the rear when I get to that end...LOL. The rear wheel set up is running a Brembo Caliper, rotor and master cyl. The rims are slightly wider than stock as well.

I gotta admit... those EPM's are very nice in that color. And it doesn't detract from the red of the tank.

Very nice bike so far. I like the redone wiring.  ;D

You have a good eye for detail. The wiring is all stock. However there is a set of relayed Fiaam horns and a Halogen 7" headlight with a modern rec/reg. The horns are so loud they make cagers wet their pants. The headlight works great and most people don't even know it is not stock. Everything can be returned to stock if I ever decide to sell it.

Thanks for looking!

Hi, as promised,

Wow, what a nice find, you're for sure very lucky.
Nice wheels too, everything seems perfect, and original.
The documentation is in very nice shape too.

I have also other wheels for my CB400F, but didn't mount them (yet).
