Topic: The city bought me a new(er) bike!!!!

Most of you know that I had a disagreement with a city bus.

For those who don't.... I lost the argument, but won the war.

I apparently damaged the bus so bad that they totaled it. The city so far has paid all of my bills (every single one of them) as well as helped me out by paying all of my personal bills as well.

So as long as I'm in therapy and don't have a clean bill of health, they pay for my rent, phone, etc. I'm not one to abuse the system, or look for a handout, but they insisted.

Well, I got a phone call from the District Alderman where I got hit, and he informed me that he was aware that I was cleared by medical to ride a motorcycle.

So without much to do, at 9pm last Thursday, a rollback truck showed up at my shop door with the Aldreman in tow. (get it, in tow... ) Sorry.... not very funny. 

And with paperwork in hand this is what they left....






Didn't cost me a dime. And considering the condition my current bike is in, something with close to 60mpg and fuel injection doesn't seem half bad.

It's a 2009 HD 883. Had close to 1000 miles on it when I got it, as well as an aftermarket seat, windshield, forward controls, and luggage rack.

Not something I would automatically go out and buy, but who can complain for free right?

Well regardless what some may think of HD, it is a pretty nice bike AND if you decide not to keep it, imagine all the 750's you could buy after selling it!

MAybe a 1200 kit comes later, after I finish my SOHC. But the mufflers aren't all that quiet.

A fellow Sportster owner told me to remove the mufflers, stand it on a block of wood clamp end down, and using a hammer and dowel inserted thru the exit end, knock out the plug.

Not a Harley guy, either - but that one is totally at the right price.  Ride the living crap out of that bastard.   You will have one thing that 99% of Harley drivers don't:  the ability to ride without thinking about how much money you have sunk into the damn thing.

Ride like you stole it?  No.  Ride like the city confiscated it and gave it to you so you wouldn't sue the piss out of them.

It's been told to me again and again that they are afraid I'll sue. So they figure, taking care of my bills for as long as I need it will be cheaper than if I win a settlement.

I never asked for them to go out of their way, just pay for what needed to be paid for. Meaning my medical stuff.

I have no idea exactly where the bike came from, but it was a private owner. I had a title in hand and paperwork for plates etc. all I had to do was sign. It was kinda wierd, walking into the DMV and having the Alderman there with me.

My stepfather just bought an 09 UltraClassic last year. When I called him and told him he just laughed. Said I should try to get a house or really big garage out of them too.

Holy #$%* Havoc, if that is what your concept of free is I would hate to see expensive.

I'm not a big fan of HD either....but it was FREE. I would add it to the stable and ride it when I felt like it. Just remember the two definations of Harley Davidson.   1. A very efficient way of turning expensive gasoline into noise.
2. A chihuahua bike.....All bark and no bite.

the best harley has to offer are the sportsters in my opinion. the 4 cam design means that pushrod angles are ideal when compared to the big twins and they make more power per cc than the big twins as well i think. those make killer cafe styled bikes and with a pair of supertrapps they sound fantastic. i rode an earlier sportster for a while and i loved it.

My very first bike was a sportster..... liked it from the show "then came bronson" with michael parks..... but mine was a AMF and a total Piece Of Sh!t. Swore off HD's after I got my next bike which was the 750K4.

I like my '06 883 sportster a lot. I had an '89 too but that was the one I got wiped out on. I put it back together and sold it for more than I paid, and that guy was getting a good deal too.

the left side covers pop off easy so put a ring of velcro through the loops and get rid of the little plastic clips. Otherwise, you will be trying to find a new one quick. Put some dielectric grease in there on the fuse area. They are known for rusting since the water can get down in there too easily. (Don't squirt that area with a hose when washing.) That area is really the only thing I can think of that anyone has a problem with.

You won't find a parts fiche anywhere so buy a manual.

You now have self cancelling signals and all kinds of neat little things.

Oh, the crossover of the pipes is hidden behind them, usually painted black. Don't screw with that or the pipes in general since you have fuel injection or it will cost you $500 just to hook up to their computer. I bought a '06 because it was the last year to have carbs.

My first bike was an HD/AMF Sprint (which I like to pretend was more like a Ducati than a Harley).  Man I loved that little bike.  Other AMFs were um, quirky?  Never hear much about "Then Came Bronson".  Bud Ekins did the stunts for the opening sequence of the show, used to pretend I was Bud while blasting hills on my Sprint  

Anywho, congrats and enjoy Havoc.  Glad to hear you got the green light to ride again
