Computer gurus I need hep!
« on: December 06, 2009, 05:38:23 PM »
I did a clean install of xp on the new HDD (western digital 250GB)
but after I get it booting up and then shut down and plug in the old HDD (40GB Segate)
to try and transfer files the computer freezes at boot up.
I've checked the boot sequence in the bios to make sure it boots from
the HDD and doesn't try the second HDD. The bios has the option
to say boot HDD 0 then CD then Floppy. I tried that then I tried
HDD 1 - CD - Floppy and came up with the same results. No boot up just stops
at the initial bios screen.

I'm also unable to get my internet connection going with the new install of xp
on the new HDD but that's another problem.

Are these IDE drives?  You may simply need to change the jumper position on your 40GB drive to slave or secondary.

Just what alan said. If you have an old 40 GB drive, I would virtually guarantee it is ide. Check your jumpers. Without them set right, the bios will not know which is disk 0 or disk 1.

Hey thegabrielj what did you find that connected your old PC to your new PC?
I've got stacks of stuff on my old one I want to transfer across but I've bought truckloads of cables and a KVM switch but none of it worked so I've given up!
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I recommend one of these puppies if you don't mind diggin into the old box.

We use them all the time at work and they are a life saver.

To the original poster I agree with what everyone said above. If the new drive is SATA and the old is IDE set the jumper on the IDE to cable select and make sure in the BIOS that the SATA drive is set to boot first. If the new drive is IDE and the old drive is IDE set the jumper on the newer one to master and the jumper on the old one to slave.

So did the jumper option do the trick?

Saw your other post!

nope, it couldn't be that simple. I'm starting to suspect my ribbon cable is at fault.
Or either I had it hooked wrong. Anyway, I'm on the new HDD now but when I started it, it wouldn't boot.
I switch the cable from the plug at the end to the plug in the middle and she booted.
So maybe I misunderstood the directions (of course that is the technical writers fault :)). It said the black plug
went to the master and the gray plug to the slave. The black is at the end of the line in my opinion and I would
intuitively think that the first plug in the line goes to the master and the second to the slave. Anyway, I'm going for the
external HDD in a box option. BUT WAIT.

What's this I missed about plugging the old HDD into the CDrom slot? Did I understand this correctly.

Thanks all.

Sounds like you're jumpered for cable select there.

Rockin, what that meant was to plug the ide cable for the cdrom into the old drive. Your motherboard probably has 2 depending on its age. As SATA come around more, a lot of boards dropped to 1 and most now have none.
They are usually ide 0 and ide 1. Ide 0 is the one the hard drive uses and 1 is the ide the cdrom uses. That would help prevent cable issues in some cases.
