Yoz '71 CB750 Build
« on: January 06, 2012, 09:00:59 AM »
Howdy all, bought my first CB750 back in Nov i think. It's a 71 K1, mostly stock with a 70s paint job on it. Bought her in SC with 4500 miles on her. Got our first little one and work tends to kick my arse often, so I'm not touching the engine as she runs as I don't have much time and $$$. The plan is to take her down to the frame with the engine in, paint them both and rebuild what needs it on my way backup. If I had the time and money would love to take her down completely and powder coat the frame/swingarm, fix the slow oil leaks, etc....but will have to save that for another winter:) Have about 8-9hours into her so far and figured I needed to start a thread:) My 2nd bike I've ever owned, first was a 91 GSXR750. Never done a restore on a bike or pulled one apart so I have alot to learn, but should be fun! Thanks for all the input and help I've gotten so far on this board. Will try to get some pix on here as soon as I can.

Here's some pix of her about 10mins after picking her up and strapping her down for the roadtrip. Plan on taking it back close to stock...with a couple minor changes:)

Thanks for the story.

WARNING...

In the photos if you look at where the top S hook attaches to the handlebars.
be warned that when the motorcycle moves around those S type hooks will come off.

You need to wrap some tape around that hook so it will not come off.
It has happened to many people.

The motorcycle usually gets damaged or comes off of the trailer.

Some of the newer straps have a safety hook with a spring loaded catch.

Sorry, slacking on keeping this updated. 2 weeks ago I tore her down, here's some pix of her partially torn down and the engine cleaned and painted. Painted the frame last weekend, but working out some runs I did...hehe. Not a painter by any mean:) Some crappy pix below from my phone

Here's her with the frame painted. Swingarm is painted as well and motor mounts. Made the mistake of not cleaning up the swingarm bushings, etc prior and messed some of the paint on the swingarm getting all the old cruddy grease out, so will need to touch that up along with the frame runs. Drilled and tapped the swingarm per hondaman's book so I can actually grease her up with ease with a normal greasegun. Some pix below. Started pulling apart my rear tire, got all the bearings out...now time to clean. I need a parts washer!!! hehe

Good quality prep and paint will be fine on the frame and also easy to touch up. See the original color was that nice Gold, whats your plan for the bodywork ?  That thing only has 4500 miles-Yikes way low--nice.

Hello ekpent. Nice K1! She looks very nice. Yessir, sanded and did some prep and reshot the swingarm and frame yesterday. Plans for the bodywork is taking it back to original with new sidecovers, emblems, tank badge(got for xmas), tank trim. The seat on there now is not in horrible shape, but the trim on the right side is banged up from the mashing up against the rear shock bolt....not sure if there is suppose to be a stop for that, but anytime you open the seat it mashes the trim.

I'm doing it more stock than not for sure. My 300s are in great shape, no holes...so cleaning those up and using those. Tossing colors around and leaning more brown lately, but that will be last thing I do. I'm new to carbs and this bike, so I have alot to learn during this, but will be good...I want to know my bike as I never plan on getting rid of her. Yessir, she does have low mile:) Spoke with Mark, he was saying they don't really break in until 8-9k. She sat for awhile so she has slow oil leaks, but not addressing it rt now. When i do the engine, i think i might epoxy paint or powder coat the frame and swing arm then:)

So far non-stock plans are:
>superbike bars...i have long ape arms;)
>maybe just one side mirror
>maybe a fantasy dark metallic brown paint...if not garnett brown
>have a spare front fender from Flick...will try on a front cut fender...see if I like it, if not put my original back on

How is the painted frame holding up? I was thinking of painting mine but im still undecided about that or powder coat. PLus im probably going to pull the engine. Getting it back in with no paint damage may be tricky.

Been awhile since I last updated, haven't been able to work on her much lately due to work kicking my arse. Finally got the rear wheel completely rebuilt with new bearings and seals. Also rebuilt the rear drum with all OEM parts, bearings from AllBalls. Also tapped the rear swingarm bolt to use zerk fittings so i can grease em up with a regular greasegun. Also removed the clearcoat on the rear drum cover and did some sanding and polishing, not going for mirror look...just to lazy I think;) Did I mention I hate polishing? Next up is tearing down the front end, new tires, paint and carb rebuild....it's warm here already!! ....slow and steady...

I can't really say as I'm not riding it and didn't bang on the frame yet really. When it gets time to pull the engine, I'll probably go high quality paint with good hardener or epoxy paint. Got a gent I work with that spent good money on quality paint and really expensive hardener...he dropped his 1/4" drive on the tank and it's didn't chip nor scratch...he swears it was due to the quality paint and hardener, which I don't think you'll ever get out of a rattle can...expect for that stuff with the separate hardener within a can, that runs 18bucks a can.

When you get to those carbs don't go crazy buying a bunch of new aftermarket junk, some of it is bad. Just clean everything you have like the jets etc well and you should be fine. The 750's believe it or not have really good float bowl gaskets also, don't rip the old ones off. In over 20 bikes I have never had to replace the stockers, and that is using carb dunk, just the junk rubber aftermarkets. Your bike should have brass floats, make sure there are no rattles inside or pin holes. One weak spot on the 71. Later years used plastic floats which can be interchanged.

Thank you for the tips, all internals and electronics I'm going to keep OEM outside of bearings, chain and tires. Thank you for the advice, will save my money on new seals on the carbs and do that! Hondaman told me the same on the carbs, just give them a good cleaning and go with it. Will check the brass floats for holes or rattles when i get to the carbs. Thanks again for the advice/tips!

Ok been horrible at keeping this up, but haven't had much time to work on the bike last couple month with work. Got new spokes on all the wheel and new tires. Got new tapered neck bearings in, now I need to strip the paint and paint. Got 2 hours to myself this weekend and got my gauges done, faces from Marcel, came out great, really pleased:

Hey Tews, I'm good thanks sorry bout the long response.

Ok, got all parts primed, wet sanded using guide coat and ready for paint. Doing a fantasy color, but it's alot like the garnet brown. Will have pix in 1 week or 2 of the completed paint, painting on the tank strips as well in irovy color. Next will be front end assembly after I rebuild the forks.
