Leather Jacket Care
« on: January 03, 2012, 03:35:32 AM »
I was wondering what everyone uses to keep their leather jackets from drying out and cracking. :D I have heard everything from wd40 to driza-bone treatment.  I was thinking of just using liquid lanolin but I want to make certain it won't hurt my jacket.

Saddle Soap for my jackets.  It has lanolin, neatsfoot oil and glycerin.  I was hooked after I used it on a crusty old motorcycle jacket I bought off ebay about 13 years ago.  It made it soft and pliable again and has kept it from deteriorating any further.  I use it a couple of times a year and that jacket is still in great shape.

Yeah I use saddle soap to clean my leather once or twice a year then treat it with mink oil to soften and protect.

I've thought about trying some mink oil, but the oil and lanolin in the saddle soap have always done such a good job of conditioning my jackets that I never took that extra step.  I'm willing to give it a try, though.

Fiebings Leather Balm. Saddle Soap can be very drying to the Leather.

Anything can be bad if you over-do it.  I've resurrected two already very old and dried-out leather jackets with saddle soap, and have used nothing else on them.  The first one I've been wearing regularly since 1999, and it's still going strong.

I think it's the word "soap" in the name that scares some people.  While it is a mild cleaner, the neatsfoot oil and lanolin in it do a great job of conditioning the leather.

Is leather care the new "oil thread"? ;D ;)

Stop at a tack store and ask, they also sell neatsfoot oil. I myself buy oil from vandam taxidermy.

It needn't be if everyone will just acknowledge that Huberd's Shoe Oil is the best possible choice, and any other choice is just foolishness.

From my experience don't use asphalt.  It does a heck of a job on leather, and especially on the zippers  ::)

Saddle soap and neatsfoot oil maybe once a year.  But really wearing it will keep it pliable.  They only get stiff if they hang in the closet for long periods.

My Dad uses olive oil and that seems to keep his nice.  I have some leather conditioner that I bought ages ago that I still use.
