CB550 Centre stand removal
« on: January 14, 2012, 07:22:19 AM »
Hello all, glad to be on the site :) yet another new member. Hopefully it's ok to start with a question: -

I bought a 1978 CB550F Super sport today, the centre stand has a piece snapped off it which has rendered it unfortunately rather useless so I intended to remove it and buy a restored stand.

I have taken out the small pin, and I have undone the bolts on each side of the stand, I then tried to tap the large pin around which I assume the stand moves out with a screw driver wrapped in rags and a rubber mallet. So far I have got little to no movement from the pin and I just wondered if anyone can tell me if I am going about this the right way.

I have not removed the spring from the stand as I had read on a similar post that it made it easier to remove the stand, unfortunately they didn't shed much light on how to remove the big pivot pin (if that's the right name for it).

Thanks in advance  :)

You might have to spread apart the frame clamps that hold the pivot pin in. Just undoing the bolts won't open the clamps, you'll have to do it with your screwdriver. There's really nothing else holding it in.

That's great thanks for the advice, I wish the bolt on mine looked as shiny and tidy as yours, I get the feeling it's not been off since it left Japan in 78 to be honest. I am guessing that yours has had a total strip down and powder coat etc? Hopefully the spreading of those bolt areas should let it move more freely :) Looking forward to trying it tomorrow.

Going to go and try and add it to the registry now :)

I use a drift if it is rusted in but you have to spread those clamps

+1 There may be some rust or old, dead grease holding it in. A little heat on the CS pivot tube may help loosen things up.

Yep; that's all in the "Assembling my '74 CB550" thread in my signature

Cheers again for the advice all, I am hoping to be able to try again this week, I had to go and get some other basic bits today for it to ensure it's all road legal :)

I saw your in depth thread on your rebuild just shortly after I sent my reply was really interesting, I think I might be able to look through that for quite a few questions I might have too.  8)
