Author Topic: Thoughts on powdering hubs?? (Read 4015 times)

Ok so I took my rims and swingarm with tank in to be powdercoated ... Color dark red. Now I was thinkn bringing in the front chrome fender and powdering that black. I ordered new black spokes and nipples for the red rims. My question is would that look kinda odd not powdercoating the cleaned up hubs??? Should I powder them black? Is this a good idea or not really? Is it ok to powder the hubs?

The area that the bearings are in have to be blocked off so that the thickness of the coating wont stop the installation of the bearings. Also, what about the buildup in the spoke holes ? That might be a problem too.

Hmmm... Yea your right. Do you think some good high quality spray paint would do ok?? Or is that a stupid idea??

any good powdercoater can powder hubs and it will look great and stand up better than paint. I have had many hubs powdercoated over the years. Just make sure to block off where the bearings go and any threaded areas.

Triple,

A good powder coating outfit will know how to block everything off. Just make sure you discuss and ask a lot of questions when you bring your stuff in. The spoke holes are easily blocked off with silicone "plugs" and the bearing surfaces with high temp tape. If your PC guy does not have that stuff, maybe look somewhere else to get it done.

I think the red rim, black spokes and red hubs will look awesome. Kind of give it that cool pinwheel effect when in motion, the black spokes will become sort of invisible. I always wanted to that scheme on a pair of wheels.

I like some polished or cast parts as well as painted parts.

Polished looks nice but re-polishing the center of the hubs later between the spokes can be a bit of a pita. Doable but...

If you want it really clean looking, cut/machine the fins off the hubcenters.....

What about anodizing the hubs? I am thinking of doing that to mine...............

Castings usually dont anodize well, there vis transluscent powder that looks almost the same.

Thehehus, the fins can be machined off on a lathe for a smooth clean look..

It depends where the fins are, and if you have to clean them.. sometimes less is more.. its just part of the little things that make your bike yours, sometimes you dont want it to look like all the others..

Eh, not a big fan. Fins are a PITA to clean haha!

Not to say I don't like them on other people's bikes - I do like the way they look.

Why are the wheels finned in the first place?

If you keep the bike indoors those polished hubs will look good for years.
It is only when they get put out doors that everything starts to get sunlight and moisture cycles that do a lot of harm.

BTW I would not cut off the fins on the hub . They add strength to the hub.

Look at the picture above. They are in the middle of the hub.

Wonder what the best way to clean those hubs with the wheel still intact and the spokes in the way? Not Mr. Triples' problem, but wondering. Anxious to see the end product, has me subscribed.

What can I use to polish them? Anything good out there on the market? Some one said semi chrome?? Or should I take these in to get done? Do I need a buffer or can I do this by hand??

I would use a brass wire wheel brush, then buff, if you have a wheel. I don't use a buffing wheel, just the normal grinding wheel with a couple of different buffing brushes and compounds. Here is a list by member NE550 if yiu want to use sandpaper.

1. Cleaned surface with paint thinner
2. wet sand w/ 600
3. wet sand w/800
4. wet sand w/1000
5. wet sand w/1500
6. wet sand w/ 2000
7. buffed w/ black rouge
8. buffed w/ brown rouge
9. polished w/ white rouge

You may want to use a stiffer polishing wheel for the black and brown, and maybe a softer one for the white.
