Topic: Points plate Can you install it wrong?

I am trying to get my eBay parts bike I just bought to start, everything is there I have gas and I have spark and I have compression...so I should be able to run.

I was checking the timing using the static method of placing a probe on the blue wire and turning the crank over till the probe lights up but I am out of adjustment slot before I can get the F line to line up.

 Could I have something on wrong?  I have the peep hole at the top and I can see the 1-4 mark when the bulb lights but I can not turn the plate far enough to line up the F mark. 

BTW I used the plate and advance mechanism from another year motor (I assumed they are interchangeable)

The F line here in the pic is too far to the left when the probe light comes on , and the points plate mounting holes are slotted for adjustment of the timing, but Im too far off.

...are you saying even when you loosen the screws on the 1/4 point and adjust it, its still firing before the F mark?

...what ever the case, does the motor even sound like it wants to start?  If the timing is even close it should run...

I did not loosen the screws on the 1-4 point, just the plate itself.  I guess I have some more studying to do....frigging clymers!

I've run into the same eissue.  for me Adjusting the points gap allowed the timing plate adjustment to reach the F mark.  When the gap was off it wouldn't even sound like it wanted to start.  Once I got it right, it magickally started!!

you can put the retard and advance 180 degrees out as well and it wont run , mick.

go to FAQ ....the problem is the slack in the plate/housing area...tt explains it well...I had the same problem...run out of adj...take the slack out of there and there ya are
