Latest Bike Find 91 ST1100
« on: February 17, 2012, 06:18:31 AM »
Picked up a nice clean but non running 91' Honda ST1100.  Turned over so i took a chance at 2000.00  Long story short, i pulled the carbs off the V4 and rebuilt them. They were pretty bad.  Runs like a top now, rode to work this morning (30 degrees)  should get up to 50 today.  Hopefully i can profit on it a little.

It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay. You paid a lot for it as a non-runner, but I can see why. Kelly Blue Book retail value on it in excellent condition is $2485, and that's a price from a dealer. As nice as it looks, you can probably get that or maybe a bit more. They're a cult classic, so find someone in a ST club for leads on buyers.

Im sure theres profit in it.  you dont see many of these come up for sale in the Indy area.

NADA
Excellent    $4440
Very Good    $2980
Good    $1470
Fair    $640

it has 50k on it, very clean and runs excellent now.  Been riding it for a few days even in the cold .

Yeah, there's usually a big difference between Kelly and NADA values. Don't know why. Good luck with it.

the ST1100 has a more cush ride,  the beemer is stiffer.     also when you let off the throttle on the beemer you slow down faster ,  the st1100 kind of coast's,   i like that better,  if i want the engine to slow me down ill gear down.

if it were not for the heated grips,  abs and the extra top bag, id lean toward the st1100.   ill take a long ride on both to make my finally decision which to sell :/

Do you have both bikes up and ready ? How do you feel the torque/drive reaction is between both of them ? that's the transition point between letting off the throttle and then hitting it again hard...in the middle of a corner, possibly.
A few of the older BMW Airhead Boxers had a kind of lifting of the rear drive during this transition of throttle but they improved that w/ the newer ones. The BMW is a twin cyl. so it will always have a more pronounced change when transitioning the on/off of the throttle...I think there's quite a bit of usable torque on that one at low RPM's...and I've had to smooth out my throttle hand when I transitioned through fast tight corners going up and down hills on those early 70's R bikes;lot's of compression to use to slow you down going down a hill with the brakes if you need it.

I have both bikes up and going,  parked next to each other in the garage.  Been riding the beemer a lot.  Ill be riding the st for a few days next week to compare.   If i sold the beemer id only have about 1500.00 total in the honda, so thats tempting in itself.

Which one feels lighter when traveling around on an obstacle course?...and then countersteering around town at 40+ MPH ? I suppose they both feel big and heavy...;it all depends what kind of trips you'll use them for primarily.I imagine the ST1100 will be great for all day Interstate Trips...

my buddy, tho a honda nut,  likes the st better than the beemer,  he thinks the beemer is a pig in slow turns and he's kind of right.   I noticed that with the beemer at a slow turn you still need to lean into the turn.  It has a much smaller front wheel than the honda st.   Ive ridden the bmw all week and next week Ill ride the ST and report.

you got a decent deal if it runs great and is clean.  If i sell the st ill be listing it for over 3k to start out and prob take 2800.00.

I'd like to know how your 91' ST1100 (the earlier one you have has a shorter wheelbase than the newer ones?)handles in the slow stuff.

ha ha,  whats up STev-O.

Rode the ST to work today,   It handles as well as the BMW,  better in the SLow Turning situations.   It does not protect from the cold as well as the BMW (beemer has more fairing) and heated grips for that matter.    There are pro's and cons for both.

BMW R1100RT Pro's:
ABS
Heated Grips
comfy seat
better storage
Dash is nicer, looks like a car dash.
MUCH easier to put on center stand. very well balanced
sitting position is straight up, no forward lean

CON's:
Stiffer suspension
slows down too fast when all the way off throttle.
more of a pig in slow turns

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Honda ST1100 Pro's:
Sleeker Look
Cushy suspension like a Caddy
Smoother engine (v-4)
more torque
Slow turns are pretty smooth
comfy back rest for the wife

Con's:
stock seat not that great
less protection when riding in cold
no Abs
no heated grips
dash is pretty stripped down.
Less the top case
Slight forward lean on handle bars

Both are shaft drive.   Both are really great bikes.    Neither of the windshields are tall enough for me.    Gas Mileage for both bike in progress.
