Hmm, no one's enjoying the view from the cat walk?  Or were they?

The moon is always interesting when it is close to the horizon.

Precision landing of Apollo 12 within walking distance of the Surveyor 3 probe Nov. 19 1969.  Pete Conrad standing next to the probe with the LM Intrepid in the background.  This was the mission in which Playmates went to the moon.  Several Playmate photos were stashed in various check list flip books aboard the spacecraft.  The spacecraft had also suffered a lightning strike shorty after liftoff and there was a concern that the landing parachute mechanism had been damaged.  There was no way to check it so mission control did not tell the crew. :o

Great pictures, but where are the stars in the background or in the reflection of the helmet?  Those early photos always never seem quite right......

Like many, I was fascinated by the space program, sorry to see it winding down. Loved the pictures. There are some vintage cameras that were left behind on the moon. Someday, perhaps someone will retrieve them.

The moon is such a bright object that the exposures are not slow enough to pick up the fainter images of stars.  To pick up anything but the brightest of stars you need exposures of multiple minutes.  So no, it wasn't a taken on a sound stage. ;) ;D

It’s actually a lovely piece of artwork done in 2009 by a Japanese artist who goes by the name A4size-ska on DeviantArt.

Sorry, Phil Plait confirms on Bad Astronomy...

Me too, Bob.  As a kid it was the most exciting an fascinating thing that happened in my growing up years.  I remember crying for a day when Apollo 1 burned on the pad killing Grissom, White, and Chafee.  Still chokes me up today...these guys where and still are my heros.  I got to meet Jim Lovell and Chuck Yeager.

The mighty Saturn 5 , the most powerful rocket ever launched.  7.5 million pounds of thrust and capable of lifting 280,000 pounds into earth orbit.  The shuttle, 4.5 million pounds of thrust and lifting 40,000 pounds.

I wonder,  was it serendipity or planning by this photographer?

Planning.  Look at the star trails.  This is the key to getting lightning shots.  Set up a long exposure during lightning activity, trip the shutter and wait for a strike.  Nothing happening during that exposure trip the shutter for another try.

You need an hydrogen-alpha filter system to show the flairs and granular surface pattern on the sun like that photo.  About $800 for my scope...too rich for me. :(

Photo with my cheap home made filter.

I just had a piece of aluminized mylar as I gave my scope to son years ago.  if that did not work i was down to welding helmet.

I still wish, to this day, that I could watch a Saturn V rocket take off. I'm only 27 but I was obsessed with the Apollo missions as a child. The shuttle just never did anything for me. Awesome Pics!
