Every friggin year.

I'm running pods with 400f mains and slows (75/40).

Tested at 1 3/4 turns out on the adjustment screws and choke partially closed, it runs best like that since re-tuning after moving here from CO.  Yes, I know its not exactly right, but it passed!

Nobody delete this thread so I can SEARCH for my settings every year!   ;D

I didn't know they still did that for our bike. Not here or cars either. Two more years and no more safety inspection ;D ;D
Just what do they check? What do they expect out of the tail pipe?

Ugh, I am glad I am done with emissions tests for the forseeable future.

The exemption of motorcycles from emission testing in the Phoenix and Tucson Metro has been passed by the state... The EPA has dropped the ball since 2008 in signing the exemption into law.   >:(

Basically, Motorcycles account for 3.5% of all vehicles tested, and the non-passing motorcycles only account for less than 1/10 of 1% of total emissions here.  I got that "possibly not-a-real-stat" from http://www.polarisatvforums.com/forums/polaris-sportsman/19581-failed-phoenix-emissions-test-again.html

I assume he looked at my headlight and taillight for visual inspection, and made sure everything looked safe.
Then, if you look at the emissions sheet I posted, acceptable HC is 1800 and acceptable CO is 5.5

Before I sold my 92 zx7r it was at about 1600 and 5.8, so it probably needed some fiddling by the new owner to pass.

ANY vehicle in the Phoenix Metro boundary built in '66 or later has to pass emissions!

Here's the other thing... if it has a check engine light, it can not be on, AND they'll check your codes to make sure that the light hasn't been removed!  Wife's car doesn't pass due to that, but luckily her dad in CO is still on the title from 10 years ago.

all motorcycles and ATVs that are tagged for the street, yes you read that right, have to test at below those levels I stated earlier.

AZ has already given into the fact that its ludicrous, now the EPA just has to get off their FAT LAZY ASSES and sign the friggin exemption bill!

If you truly legally passed, the baseline must be very high. Or, maybe the inspector let you slide?

I'm running a bit lean with pods, so its burning as much of its fuel that it is required to, plain and simple.

The computer is the one that passed me, for sure.  He asked for my money while I was still in the testing zone sitting on the bike, I said "ask for my money then tell me I failed, right?"  He said, well, it ran thru the quick pass portion of the test, so I'm thinking you passed.  He pulled the sheet out of the printer, and thats what it said.   :)

Honestly, the bike is pretty dialed in... points, timing, tappets, carbs cleaned and rejetted yesterday... I didn't go to MMI for no reason, although sometimes I question that.   :D

In case anyone's wondering how they tested... those nozzles/tubes sitting in front of each bay in the pic, were placed over each pipe (I have a 4 into 2) then hooked up to the EGA, he had me keep it at idle which was about 2k RPM because I had it running lean and partial choke, let the computer do its thing.

If they had wanted me to hand over the bike, I'd have said no thank you, see ya.

It was painless, but then again, it passed.

It might be that the reason EPA is taking so long to approve the plan is because those morons in our legislature submitted a 138 page proposal to the EPA. http://www.azdeq.gov/environ/air/vei/download/1119sip.pdf  138 pages to explain why they felt bike testing in the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas wasn't beneficial to air quality? BTW, Testing in Tucson for bikes and "collectible vehicles" isn't required anymore, and collectibles are exempted in Phoenix. So if you want to get out of testing in Phoenix, register your bike as a collectible vehicle (if it qualifies), and get the Historic Vehicle license plate. You'll also need to change your insurance to match the vehicle status.

You should have lived here in the '70s and '80s when they tested our bikes on a car dyno. And we had to ride it! Scary as hell. They put a stop to that practice after several bikes shot off the dyno roller and into the street, wall, test personnel, etc.

I've checked into collectible ins/staus in CO.  Ins requires its value to be a certain amount.  It wouldn't qualify.  Just because we think they're collectble, doesn't mean they're irreplaceable to the ins companies.

It is just a test by the state to see what would happen and what kind of problems there were.

It is just a fishing expedition to try to make more money.

Motorcycles are such a small percentage of vehicles and ridden only a few months of the year . Engine size is so small compared to a car. In some places like Tucson motorcycles might get ridden 9 months of the year. Anyway in California the bike has to be a 2008 or newer and no tests have been put out for public use as of this time.

One way to look at it is, it is cheaper to get emission test results to see how you bike is running than a $100.00 dyno run with no adjustments at that price. If they say the CO level is high then it must be running rich, or it needs new piston rings.

Right now the Dyno is $100-$300 if any adjustment need to be made and not all dyno testers should ever touch you carbs or injection system.
Especially CARBS. The younger guys in general know NOTHING about carbs.

I am not saying ALL young guys do not know anything about carbs, but dealerships do not know much thats for sure.

BTW 5.5 parts per million CO would be like a poorly running 1958 chevy V8 and they were allowed 6.0 PPM

But they do not even test those year of cars anymore.

CO is measured in %, not PPM. HC is in PPM. They allow us 5.5% CO and/or 1800 PPM HC. Either one is a filthy running engine wasting fuel and possibly wearing faster. I had a guy in my shop a while back with a '74 750K that blew over 8% and 2400 PPM. It made my eyes water and nose burn. He thought it ran just fine, except it was fouling plugs. No kidding? Maybe emission testing isn't such a bad idea after all.

Well, it depends on the carbs and other emissions stuff on the bike too, sometimes things just don't like the "acceptable range"... for example, my ZX7R had Kiehin flat slide CR carbs installed from the Kawasaki factory, but on the manual for the carbs it says in plain English "not for street use, for racing purposes only".  It also had the emission stuff removed from it though.  It was walking that line of being able to pass and not, at 5.5... and I promise you, it was very tuned and running perfectly.  ;)  That's what we were getting from the EGA at Arizona Kawasaki.  I could have gotten it to pass by turning in the adjustment screws a 1/4 or 1/2 turn, but I sold the bike before needing to emission or register it here.

If something doesn't have a catalytic converter on it, it will typically produce more emissions.  Doesn't mean its running any more poorly than the same restricted system.

I'm in the Phoenix area too and it frustrates the sh!t out of me that I need to run an old bike through every year that doesn't see 500 miles a year. In Az they did pass a collector/classic car bill about 5 years ago. If you have collector car insurance you are not required to emissions test. I had a 1973 240Z. I got Hagerty Insurance and brought it to DMV and wala instant plate and tags. I paid less yearly for full coverage with value of car at $25k than I was paying for liability prior to classic insurance.  They need to add motorcycles to that bill.
