1975 cb400f help!
« on: March 25, 2012, 10:17:34 AM »
I recently bought a 1975 cb400f. The headlight does not work. After some inspection there is no power to the fuse block for the headlight circuit. Any thoughts why this would be? The other thing is that it is missing the starter button. From what I saw you can not just buy the button for this bike. Does anyone have any suggestions to make one? Or does anyone have a right side control for this bike? Its just starter and kill switch. I am also looking for a right side cover in light ruby red if any one has one. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum kart74 !  :),
I recommend that you check the wiring mass inside you're headlight..particularly the connections to both of you're handlebar switches.

Thanks for the reply but I started at the headlight and switches and worked back. There us no power to the switch and I found no power to the fuse block. That is the last spot I checked. I don't know where power should be coming from going to the fuse block.

ok i have made it farther and it seems like it all has to do with the started button being missing. There is a black\red wire that runs from the starter button to the power side of the fuse block for the head light. Since the starter button is missing i assume that is causing there to be no power to the fuse. Now i am unsure how that button would have been in there. Does anyone know how this should be?

The starter button disconnects the headlight when cranking the engine on your model. There is a clear piece of plastic behind the starter button that degrades with time and yours is likely missing. In fact, I'd guess it broke and the PO removed it.  Without that piece of plastic, the starter switch will not work and apparently a connection has been lost to your headlight circuit. The best solution is likely just to get another switch. I recommend against buying used ones for your bike because a few plastic Internal parts will likely be broken, or ready to break, in whatever used parts you buy. You can find new ones on eBay and at various parts houses.
