Broken Tail Light and DMV
« on: March 28, 2012, 02:30:10 PM »
So I am planning to take my Motorcycle License test in the morning as I have a reservation since I have put it off long enough and have just been riding on a permit.  Well the other day I was turning the 550 around in the garage and while backing it up the tail light got a little love tap from the wall which pretty much caused it to explode the left side.

I was just wondering if anyone knew if the DMV (GA) would allow me to take my test with the red lens tape on my tail light for a temporary fix since I do not have another one laying around. The tail light still works I just busted the main part of the lens.

if its just cracked, remove the lens, place tape on the inside for the test.

No, it pretty much took half of the lens off which ended up in about 40 pieces.

Print out a completed auction on E-bay and tell them you bought one but the knucklehead shipper did not get it to you yet  ;) You will install as soon as it arrives.  PS-You should have a good one for safety sake.

FWIW...What about going to an autoparts store or home depot and buying a " trailor" light and jury-rig a lens onto your tail light.  I would not want to take a chance with my test.  DMV in NY is a crap-shoot (my state).  It's all about the person you get and how their day is going.  Good luck, I hope it all goes well.

Get real. The inspectors job is to make sure it is right.
Not your promises that you will fix it.
Get some kind of decent tail light on it.

In Ohio they will turn you away if your bike doesn't have proper signals, headlights, tail lights, and horn.

In Florida if there are enough layers of red taillight tape on it to actually make it light up RED instead of PINK, you're good to go, but that's on the roadway. I would fix it with some kind of lens or taillight like everyone is recommending just to be safe. (they usually have long lines, you  don't want to wait to take the test twice!)

Illinois is tight too.  When I went to take my driver's test at 16, I got sent away because ONE of the TWO horn chimes didn't work!  If you are cool with paying for the test twice, go for it.  You might be ok, you might not.

Pretty much the guy I got here did not say a thing about my tail light. He didn't even do an inspection on my bike for anything. He was pretty chill. I also lost 2 points on the test because I didn't do my fast stop fast enough but the test was pretty much cake.

Good deal!!!  Now that you have it, don't EVER let it go!!!  Some people get real #$%*s grading them on their tests who seem to enjoy failing people.  My father has not ridden a bike in 30 years, but he still renews the M class every time "just in case."

30+ years ago you could just get a motorcycle endorsement in KS without a test... My mom has never operated a motorcycle but still gets an M at renewal  ???
