welding triple tree
« on: April 06, 2012, 05:15:32 AM »
Anyone ever welded or had welded a cracked triple tree? Thinking about getting my 71' cb750 tree welded. Thoughts? Experience?
Thanks.

I replaced mine and was warned here that welding broken one never works. Imho it is easier to find a good one than find a facility that would weld it well enough to bet your life on.

That's a pretty thick casting to try to weld back together.  It probably would be easier to find a decent used one than to find a welder even willing to take on the liability of repairing such a critical component.

Yeah, I'm kinda partial to my hide!  :) Always been leary about trying to repair front end stuff. It can get you killed, fast. Guess I'll try to find a used one that won't break the bank.

I'm assuming its the unicorn style? You do know why it broke? The spacer was missing in the clamp gap.

Many have tried or said they have tried to fix a broken one. I've never seen or heard of one fixed. HondaMan also ays in his book, they are unfixable.

You'll find good used ones go for $150 and up. If you get one for less consider yourself lucky. But eBay usually has a selection, and you may find someone giving one up for cheap.

many threads on that piece. It is no longer available from Honda, was only used in a few model years, and one by one they get broken. So scarcity is pushing the price up.

Yeah, I know about all the reasons for cracking. But, all the spacers are in place. Gotta check em after i take the tree off and make sure they're correct. It's cracked in the clamp on the tube. And yes, it's the unicorn.

If its a homemade spacer, of too thin thickness, the clamp will still break. I have a piece in Tricks and Tips on making a proper thickness spacer.
