I thought we were eccentric
« on: June 06, 2006, 09:55:00 PM »
Just thought this was funny. ;D

I have a relatively new 8.0 Johnston outboard for a dingy at the house. I broke off the carry handle, and another widget the past couple of years and wanted to find a microfiche for the engine  on-line so I could order some parts easily without leaving the Island.

I actualy found a forum for people talking about outboard and inboard marine engines  ;D ;D
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=28
While I am aware there are many on-line forums for just about every topic, I found it a hoot to locate this one.

10 Min's later and I'm at a site with exactly what I needed.

....isn't the internet an interesting place. :D

Back before I learned that there were 2 best days of boat ownership (the day you buy it, and the day you sell it!), I had a sailboat with a 1976 6hp Johnson outboard motor.  That little motor was a work of art!  An absolute jewel!  It would power my 22 ft. Catalina sailboat at 6 knots by GPS!  It was smooth, and quiet too, and a miser on fuel, and it never ever left me stranded..  A buddy that had just finished bragging about his brand new Honda 6hp 1 cylinder, 4 stroke outboard was then amazed at how smooth, quiet, and powerful my 2 stroke, 2 cylinder outboard was when I fired it up, and it was 25 years old at that time!  :)

I was going to say one of our members also restores vintage outboard engines, but you beat me to it.  ;)
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

OK Jonesy here goes.
I need to get the tilt bolt out to replace the carry handle.
Nut on one end, counter sunk bolt end at the other end.

Because it is counter sunk, you obviously can't get at it to un-thread it out . Am I to assume you have to "whack" it out from the thread end?.....with the nut threaded on a bit of of course.

I tried a bit of taping, didn't want to break anything.

So, is it just me remembering with overly fond eyes, or was the mid '70's Johnson 6HP one of the better ones?  I guess it is not quite vintage yet?

Hmm, interesting point. Dan, are there age categories for outboards? By that, I think/mean the VJMC (perhaps other MC orgs.) consider bikes over 35 as antique. How about outboards?

The Greenspun board - where this group started, had some interesting groups.
There was one about lift maintainance, then another on the Titanic film, some dedicated to medical complaints, and
one other for bikes - MV Agusta's !
That's how I found this group in the first place.
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

Varied people, varied interests. It's what makes the world go 'round. It would be pretty boring if we were all the same. ;)

In the AOMC we only have 2 categories, Antique (anything 1950 and older) and Classic (anything from 1951 to 30 years ago (in this case 1975)).

Duster, if we all owned K8's, there would be no need for this board.  The only thing I hear about them is NO PROBLEMS.
