Topic: how to remove tires from wheels?

Thanks guys looks like I'll do whatever I can to get these old crusty tires off so I can work on the wheels. When I get new tires I'll have them mounted and balanced at a tire shop! I'll be replacing the tubes and everything anyways. Not sure you get the idea just HOW crusty these tires are LOL

BTW...Do not attempt to cut the tire off. You can get seriously hurt trying to cut the steel reinforced tire. And damage the rim . Of course if you get hurt you will not care about the rim. LOL.

Age has nothing to do with anything. I just find it funny that so much can be said about removing a tyre. I could do this task when I was around 6, nearly 8 years ago now. 

I understand LesterPiglet, most of us had to change our own bicycle tires with tubes .

Many kids grow up now and just take everything to the bicycle shop.
Where I grew up we did not have the money for that.

Old tires get hard and they are a #$%* to get off. I have cut them off and that is fine. You will need some irons to put the new tires on and not put a hole in the tube. Soapy water or Windex is a good lube to mounting tires.

Just took mine off both front and back so i could put new spokes on. Just used a utility knife to cut away down to the inner cable and then cut those with a dremel. The crustier the easier to cut with a utitlity knife....my forearm got a good workout:) Think I read elsewhere some people used a sawsawl

So much work and risk when you could just learn to do it the easy way. The right way.

Oh Poo. Just use a hacksaw straight down the middle and a tin snips when you get to the bead. If you wet the rubber it cuts easier.

dont try to do it in the cold
if your bike lives in the garage take them inside or leave them in the sun for a bit

I often read this about old tires being "hard" but I had no problem taking off a 20 year old tire and two others in their 30's recently.  Just used three irons and the rim resting on a small garbage can.  It was no big deal and was as 754 said in an earlier post easier and quicker than cutting it off which I had also done.

Oh yeah! Some snips would've done the trick. Oh well, it was an old #$%*ty rim and all I needed was a couple of spokes. BTW: '74 CB750K hub/speedo drive for sale!

I got the front tire off by cutting it off, sliced it down the middle with a razor and then snipped the steel bands on either side. I was trying to do the same thing with the rear wheel but I ended up trying a hacksaw for the steel bands and sliced into the wheel LOL     There's a 1/4" deep gash in the side of my wheel now. Do I need to replace the wheel or do you think I can get my uncle to fill it in with some mig weld and sand it smooth?

For the record, this would have NEVER happened with the tires that were on my bike. They have steel bands around the insides and they are stiff as hell, they won't stretch at all there is no way to lift them over the wheel I don't care what tools you have

 They never do stretch coming off, you MUST position bead into INNERMOST portion of rim..ie, the middle, then start lifting over edge of rim on OPPOSITE side..
 Failure to do this means... you aint getting it off..

Yeah, I forgot to mention I used two of those woodworkers clamps to pinch the bead together on the opposite side.  Large C clamps would work too.  I have two 6 inch irons and a 24 inch.  The small ones have nice slim ends but lack leverage so when I need them on the initial bead lift I just slipped a short piece of pipe over the end of the iron to gain leverage.
