Well what a day. I took my Sporty for a 150 mile ride. I hadn't intended to, but have you ever had one of those days where you were enjoying your ride so much that you just kept going? The weather was great, sunny and around 70 deg F, the bike was running perfectly, and I had tons of time, so everything just fell into place.
I'd had a problem last time out with a plugged breather in the fuel cap, so with the new "Drag Specialties" lockable cap fitted, it was no longer an issue. I had a couple of "First's" too, the bike has just turned over 5000 miles (not a great deal for a 22 year old bike) and with the minor mods I've done (carb, exhaust and higher gearing with the 18" rear wheel I installed) it hit 100 MPH for the first time in it's life.
In fact, it was getting very close to 120 @ 6000 RPM, before I rapidly backed off when I saw a suspicious looking car coming towards me, that turned out not to be a cop car, but "Careful" is my middle name, which is why I've still got my license........
My brother died in June last year and I've been meaning to put his Triumph Rocket III on the road and get it registered here in Victoria. Last time I rode it was either July or August 2015, just before I started working in Canberra. Not surprisingly, it was covered in crap:
I drained the 2 year old fuel out of the tank (and tipped it in my son's Ford Explorer, being an American truck it's designed to run on low octane gas, so while the Rocket wouldn't have liked it, the Ford loves it) and filled it with fresh fuel, and I was super impressed that it fired up right away! The battery is 10 years old this year and still cranks it over fine, and with fresh fuel, it ran great. I decided to give it a wash, and I have to say that for a 10 year old bike, (with only 7500 miles on the odo) it still looks pretty good.
Tomorrow I'll pump the tyres up, go get a Roadworthy certificate, then to VICROADS (the DMV) to pay them a ridiculous amount of money to make it all legal and get a new number plate. Should have enough time for a nice ride afterwards! Cheers, Terry.
