« on: June 13, 2006, 05:09:09 AM »
Steeler QB seriuously injured.  Broken jaw and facial fractures.

In serious condition with HEAD issues.  Hit is HEAD.  Hope he's okay but just another reason people should be wearing full face helmets.

Darwin at work.  Looks like the only real injuries were to his face.  Imagine that.

Imagine, he could have gotten away with a broken helmet, but I guess a broken jaw works

With a busted jaw he can not talk trash  ;)

I ride without many times and I should not. I can tell you from a high speed movie type dump in which my passenger and I skid under a crossing semi trailer. HELMETS ........WILL .......SAVE ...............YOUR ..............LIFE!! No if ands or buts.

I agree, this is natural selection at its best.

Illinois is one of the last non helmet law states left, for the time being... ::)
Every summer their is a high profile crash (such as this) the bigwigs in cityhall begin the helmet law debate. They fight about it all summer, and then it gets dropped as the bikers go "away" for the winter. The following summer it starts right back up again...

My brother-in-law is a Firefighter/EMT, and has told me more than enough stories of bike accidents he has been called to. He says the people he has come across who WERE NOT wearing helmets actually came out better than the people WHO WERE wearing helmets. I recall one deal where he told me some dude was wearing a full face helmet, crashed into a pole or something , and the visor actually shattered and gouged both his eyes, leaving him blind.

I choose not to wear a helmet when I ride, but I also don't pull 12 o'clock wheelies down the Kennedy (expressway) at 160mph+ either...

My 4cents........

Dude wears a helmet to play football, where no one is moving faster than what? 12 miles per hour, takes place on a lawn not pavement, without any large metal objects, only other people and an inflatable ball- but not on a bike. ??? ??? ???  This make football players look unintelligent.  ;) ;D
The nfl makes him wear a helmet, so he does.  But PA doesn't make it mandatory so einstein gets on his cvzxj8675309 with no melon protaction.  See what laws do in the absence of critical thinking.  I fear for this country. and not just its quarterbacks.

EDIT: just saw the tv newsitem... ok so much for the rule of law theory, he also had no license an expired lerner's permit, and had never taken a course or passed a written test to prepare for his unhelmeted riding.  This man must be very depressed, this combination of actions could be considered suicidal.  I also wish him a speedy recovery and hope the reasons for his self-destructive (moreso than the rest of us) behavior is found.

As far as being blinded by a face shield shattered by the pole, or rendered unrecognizable by that same pole, i would still choose a helmet and blindness.  I could still listen to records, and you know, be alive.
And I'm anti airbag and even seatbelt to some extent that it doesnt make up for a plastic car and suv inertia, but without a steel cage around me i want good gear and a helmet at those speeds and in that environment.

just a cent or three more

May he will lose his contract and get sued for being a dumbass. To fullfill his contract he must remain in same condition as when he signed the contract, less game related injuries. This guy is a dumb ass in everyway, let's pray he did not breed before this bout of stupidity. If he goes, good riddens. Ther are too many dumb people on the planet as is. Stupidity should be fatal.  ;D

BTW  here in CO still no helmet law but (monkey) I wear mine most all the time.   Mostly cause the kid HAS to wear his.   Dont want to go messin with the kid.

It doesn't matter who's fault it was.  To ride without protection is a death wish and it's only a matter of time.  It's probably the person's fault that turned in front of him, but in an accident, it's really both party's faults.  On the bike, you have to be responsible for the other person as well, in order to stay alive.  Hard to sue when you're dead.
My dog loves me for the person I try to be.  Either that or he's hungry.

There is only one undisputable fact when it comes to the helmet issue, and that is:

You will NEVER change anyone's mind about whether they should or should not wear a helmet, especially over the internet.  Everybody has their reasons, and to a large extent, those reasons are based on valid points.  Doesn't matter which side of the argument you're on.

This argument has probably been going on since the middle ages when knights were wearing full armor and helmets.  Some would say, "it limits your vision and hearing, and gets really #$%*ing hot!".  And others would say,"but if/when you do get hit in the head with a mace, you'll live to tell about it!".

This brings up the get helmet debate again. To wear or not to wear?
Here in Florida you need to have a minimal 10,000 dollars personal injury protection insurance
to ride helmet less.Me, I have always wore a fullface helmet and am insured to the gills on all three of my bikes.I think it is you choice to wear a lid or not.I do give my fellow riders i cruise with the business if they don't wear their skid lids.Too many pros and cons between the two sides.
I believe it just makes sense to wear it,FROM EXPERIENCE.My 2 cents again.Be safe out there folks.

Looks like he was downright booking when he smacked the side of the car. I wrecked my CB360 going 45 and it looks nothing like that. Only broke the tripple clamps. Must've been screwing off.

Not only should riders wear helmets but they should wear full face helmets! I had an accident on the Interstate when a minivan driver didn't slow down for traffic as did I. Next thing I know, I'm in a helicopter on the way to the trauma unit. The entire chin and side of my helmet was ground off but I didn't get one scratch on my head or face. Had I been wearing one of my open face helmets, I wouldn't be here writing this. After I got out of the hospital, as soon as I could move on my own, I threw four really nice Bell helmets in the garbage. I won't go out of my driveway without a full face helmet now.

Before you make comments, the helmet I wear for street use is a flip-up with really good side view. On the track I wear a standard full face with Snell rating, as required.
