Just discovered in Wikipedia that in order to maintain - without problems - speeds of 200 km/h the Diplomat Coupé had the engine of the competitionmodels of the Corvette. Anyway, thanks for the offer, Dave. You ment well. I return the offer by inviting you for a ride in that German Holden Opel Diplomat B 5.4 V8 Auf der Autobahn...

On May 10th, 1940 Germany rolling into the Netherlands and occupied the country. In 1944 Allied troops using gas guzzling American made tanks, Jeeps and trucks started the liberation of The Netherlands (operation Market Garden). Back in the 40s we never heard anyone in Europe complain about Americas gas guzzlers. The world was happy that we were a nation that had powerful vehicles and not little Sissy Nancy pants cars that put out 14 H.P.

Nowadays it seems that the world has forgotten how important our role was in stopping Germany in its quest to take over the world. How many of our guys died in the Netherlands? How many of them had never even heard of the Netherlands before they were sent there? Our guys fought and died for people and countries they never knew existed. Does that give them some latitude to have fast cars that dominate in the 1/4 mile but suck in the Alps? You Betcha!!

Passing sports cars all the time on the 400 series hwys up here in CAN on my '77 550.
Won't say what speed I'm topping out at but can say this, at the speed limit, the bike wants to push a lot more.

Highway riding is boring, very boring, that's why it has to be done quick. As said, where allowed, I always did it at 140 km/h @ 7000 rpm.

it aint swinging,its been nestled where it belongs for quite a long time now,,and still delivers,its only had new heads and a few transmissions since 92,and two differentials,and an inlet manifold,and an ignition,and a couple of water pumps,two sets of headers,and what ever else,i drive it everyday and have for 28 years,i like going up hills still on the primary barrels.

Sounds a little like Grandads old axe he's had for 60 years, only had 4 new heads and 5 new handles. My 650 sits quite comfortably at 5000rpm at 100kph and I run out of staying power before the bike does.

Yeah again at about 75mph (or at least that's what my speedo reads) I'm at about 6500rpm. It just seems very strenuous that's all. I did two exits on the NJTP last night and this morning. That's about 8 miles of steady 6500rpm's.

At 75mph my 650 sits on 6000rpm, I wouldn't worry about the revs too much, if the engines weren't designed for it they would have geared them so they rev lower. Just remember that when these bikes were built a 500/550 was actually a big bike and expected to do long jaunts down the highway. I wouldn't worry about it as long as it is in a good state of repair it will be fine, just enjoy the ride.

I did 1500 miles in 4 days last year on my 550 with a cruising speed of 75-85. I would stop every hour or so for gas, and that was it. Ran like a champ the whole way.

I've made it a habit that whenever I'm forced to maintain a speed that makes my mirrors vibrate for a long time to shift down to 4th gear. When my motor is happy, I'm happy.
