Testing rotor on bike?
« on: June 25, 2012, 07:22:02 PM »
Anyway to test the rotor on the bike? Everything I see shows it removed testing the rings behind it. I'm going through my charging system since I have the motor back in the frame now making sure everything is ok.

This will make it very easy for you.
Great video by the way.

Yeah I watched this video... but can you get to the slip rings on the rotor with it on the bike or do you have to remove it?

If you have to remove it I'll just pretend it's fine and see if it's charging once I get it all going. My bike had 2012 tags on the plates and was being ridden early 2011 so I bet it's fine.

I don't know what bike you have, but on the CB650 and the early DOHC4s, you pull off the stator cover and the rotor is sitting there with sliprings exposed. No need to remove the rotor itself.

What bike are we talking about!!?  The 750 ROTOR is a big chunk of metal that doesn't need testing. The stator and field coils are different and you basically check the resistance/continuity which can be done with the 2 sets of wires coming from behind the alternator cover to the shifter cover.

Yeah, what he said. The rotor is untestable. Just a hunk of rotating steel. The stator wires are accessible for testing behind the sprocket cover (maybe the shifter cover, I can't remember.)

PS: What slip rings?

Ok. Yeah there are 3 yellow wires and 2 other wires I believe coming out into the shifter cover.

Yup thr 3 yellows I know about. the otehr 2, well electrics is not my strong suit.

AS you say, if its been running relatively recently, safe bet alls ok. helps to shine up the connectors and use dilectric grease for good connection. But not necesary.

Well. It was a barn fresh bike with a seized motor that I bought. Never heard it ran. Was running early 2011 PO says. I rebuilt the motor and stuff just wanted to check these components. I did test between the 3 yellow wires and the reading looked ok. I'm going to assume it's fine until I get it running and see if I have a problem from there....

Dude, why don't ya test the wheels for run-out, or the side stand angle when used on a level surface.... very important to know before you even attempt to get your bike actually fired-up  and running  ::)
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
