I got a cross reference chart from CB750.org for filters like:
Fram# CH6009
Purolator# ML-16809
K&N# KN401
...but who locally carries those #'s?

Most auto shops have them...at least one of them. Advanced Auto carries the Fram.

I think I've seen the Fram one there only because I recognized the "naked" style it is.

Took me a while to find it in our walmart. They have a motorcycle section - it is not with car oils and filters.
Also Advance Autoparts have it on the shelf - in the small engine area.

But I always buy two to have a spare on the shelf, compare to car filters they are hard to find.

I wish out wally world had a M/C section. Most around here have been getting rid of the M/C filters.
Some orileys have been too.

Just a heads up... I don't work for K&N, but I do use the KN-401. If you order from their site UPS ground shipping is free, conditionally: times past it was a dollar amount; right now looks like if you order 2 or more. And they are CHEAP right now!

The Wix I have is 51390 the short one I need to look at the one you mentioned is it long or short. Maybe mine has been re-baged as well.

The Fram CH6009 I installed yesterday was so tight on the bolt (pre-oiled both) that the spring couldn't push it back. Had to really fiddle with it to install. Looks to be an original (correct) bolt. The "F" model (mine is "K") is a Fram CH6008, could I have the wrong bolt?

Might be a old fram. Many years ago they had problems with the center rubbers being to tight. Havent encountered any in a long time. Last one I just took back and showed the counter person the diff and did a exchange.

I'm thinking the spring & the ability of the filter to slide forward is the "bypass feature" (if the filter started to clog up)

and unless this one loosens from heat cycles, it isn't moving

Ok, I read that the by-pass is in the bolt where I do see something.
I removed the filter assembly & the seals now slide somewhat easier than when first installed (after only 1 short heat cycle) so I think they're ok now, as they do need to seal on the bolt so all the oil goes through the filter.

I may need to start a new thread because I have lost track of how much oil is now in the bike
