FIRST TRY RESTORATION tons of photos
« on: July 09, 2012, 08:48:21 AM »
After introductory phase I will try yo do my first resto with your help i hope so folks.
Ok here we go ,last year I bought three Hondas CB 750 .
First one 1971, look like Chooper can start try and needs a carbs job I think so .
 Only 32 000 K have a side covers .
Look at this cooooool paint job .Guy who painted is not kicking around any more ,sad ! >:(

Second one 1972 seized engine all rusty it was sitting in somebody shed that was leaking roof for a years .
I bought them all from one guy from Berriie Ontario .very ruff condition but everything on it except left side cover :

And finally a third one 1975  in a pieces guy try to restore it and gave up.
Frame and motor and bunch of boxes with screws, nuts, different fenders and wheels and ect.
Motor is seized ,try to turn not working ,but who cares i'am gona do it from scrap if I could hopefully with your help guys!

I am concerned can I do it ,doesn't look easy .
Never tuch bike engine before ,except change oil,and some minor work.
Got all original manuals three of them and most important all papersssssssssssss 8) for the bikes .

So plan is to take apart first 1972 one and try to restore it to an original condition.
For other two will see may use some parts from them for first rebuild but blue bike has a lot of history I am thinking just fix it repaint it and  enjoy it.Will see 1
Wish me a luck guys i need badly your cheer  :)
Thank you guys in advance

Zoran thats my name

You certainly have enough to work with!

I would sell what you do not need to finance your project.
That way many parts can be saved.

Welcome!   gotta ask, is the 72 tank rusty on the inside too? ;D  It would be ironic if there was no rust inside.

Thank you guys for warm welcoming .
Jerry h it is ironic it's not rusty from inside .
I  took apart hole bike ,started working on engine. Before that red lots of this forum to see am I able to do it.Have a faith that  you guys going to help me with this .Engine was seized wasn't any chance that it could move it.Try everything !
After I took apart engine,  sow that  on the camshaft and camshaft holder  one of the bearing surfaces  badly weared .That is first one after sprocket
I'll post a picture  .
So I am wondering can I used one from same bike year 1975 to replace it and camshaft and holder  or just go and by new cam like  ( Dynoman ) or somrething else and holder ?
1 . Some of my budies that are in Harley advice me to go with little bit more aggressive cam ,no anything like 836 or 915 just something to freshen up the engine ?
2 . What do you think about that ,but then I should go with different valves and springs to should  I ?
3 Also in manual said that you must change a valve seats !
I will appreciate your input

More action

After I took of cylinder head  I discovered that last on the left piston rod is also stuck ,actually the first one from the bottom on the picture, most shiniest one .
Three of them moving freely and that one is not moving. When u push that one it's moving  the hole crankshaft !
Also on the cylinder head where the cam chain getting through i can see a wear of cam chain left and right from cam chain tensioner.it look like the chain wasn't tension-ed properly.I am not expert but that I was thinking .

Because of that I don't feel confident to open further lower case of the engine .what do u think ?
I do not want to leave like that,  want to be sure everything is OK.
Or I just send engine to some shop in Toronto area ?
Any Canadains that follow thread with suggestion about a Mechanic shop ?

Pistons very dirty too,  lots of carbon and smoke

THank you for reading and have a Great Monday night folks !

Keeping tabs on you.  I don't think you had as many pictures before.  Sounds like you made a great score on 3 bikes in one place!  That is great, less running around and legwork.

Yeah hari ,you wright but the  plan was to do two of them.First rusty one 1972 to restore in an original condition and the blue one 1971 to build a cafe racer or rigid frame some bobber .
So basically the third bike 1975 suppose to be for the parts .
Not sure jet what to do.I been reading for a week ,MC Rider thread 97 pages about his build and I wondering what I am doing here as an amateur, you people are scientists and professionals .
It look like this is to big bite for me I don't now can I swallow or not !
Also I am thinking ,should I start to taking apart 1975 engine looking for parts like cam shaft , cam holders ,valves or start buying new ones .
Clean pistons little bit , they look better I'll post pictures maybe I need them new to ?

Normally  I will change piston rings .
If I decide  to go for a new cam , holders and valves for 736 cc which one i should by and to refresh little bit motor?
I need some advice on that guys ?
Thanks and have a great weekend

Hey, don't worry too much about your lack of knowledge mate, we all started somewhere. I would highly recommend buying Hondamans book on these bikes, written by an enthusiast for the every day Honda junkie.....   8)

Thank u Brad , I try to find that link,no success ,and also because I am going to restore this one in original condition maybe is better to stay with 736 .
Any other toughs ?

Welcome,  with time and patience and guidance from this forum you should be able to rebuild a motor. Do not farm out any work unless the mechanic has experience with the older bikes. The pistons, cam and holders and probably the cylinder are shot.  The 836 kit is an option but you should have all the parts needed with the three motors you have. The 836 kit, boring and head work will set you back a minimum of $500, so try to use what you have...Larry

Thank you Mo Mo , I got your point but is not easy .
Today, didn't want to do anything and then said, lets clean some mess in garage .

After I clean it , decide to check on carbs and how they look like after 40 years and mayself never so inside carbs except in photo.

Not bad ,what do you guys thinking ?!I seen here worst .

But somebody long time ago was working on this one.
On the top of the carbs there is a three  bolts 10 mm and one Philips instead. So I will change that one for sure.

So then I decide to remove valves .Didn't have a spring tensioner ,didn't want to wait on my budy who is building old Harleys ,he went in New Hampshire for Nesscar race , coming back tomorrow .
So I said I am going to do with a big clamp .
And that is where we  pay for no expirience. Thats what scares me of !
So I put a clamp ,tightened from one side and took those two small triangle  things of no problem , spring to.
Keep on doing to the last one ,remove all 8 of them.
I was happy and then I look at it , three valves were bend  no to much but
you can see it easily !
So I f.....
Five of them get out no problem ,didn't now what to do with other three.
Try to straight them with wise grip ,no working.
I took Dremler and cut them and they come out after.
No bigie I was thinking to change valves anyway .Here is a photo three short ones ,others fine.

Next task to remove piston rings ,i was wondering pistons are o key.
Remove rings  clean little bit pistons and decide to replace them to .

Want to call of the day but change my mind and strat to clean that rusty tank .Somebody didn't like that Honda sign on it and put a lots of bondo on it.
Before

And after 45min - one hour :Clean bondo but it's going to be more sending .

This is a big dent ???

Tank in original golden color undernet ,but I will change it to orange -red.

That's was all for this weekend, thank you  for reading and advising  me guys !
Enjoy Sunday night

Zoran

Hello guys again,
I need some help please.
As I mentioned earlier ,last piston rod on the right side is not turning .When I try to move it it turns a hole crankshaft.
So I am doing lot s of reading here about removal crankshaft .
But I think somebody mentioned that you can move crankshaft without removing that AC generator????Am i wrong or
Do I have to go by the book and nothing else !!
Thanks
Z
