Ebay scams
« on: August 01, 2012, 08:47:29 AM »
Be careful when buying carbs on Ebay.
Some sets of carbs may not have some internal parts.
If they do not show some parts you need to ask about them.
For instance If the ad says the carbs are being sold for parts,
make sure to ask which parts are already missing.

If they say they do not know, then ask to see the photos of the
float bowls of all the carbs and to see the slides with needles.

And just because they show a photo of the float bowls does NOT
mean it does not need new float needles and seats.

And remember..... you cannot polish your way out of buying
 new float needles and seats.

Also always check with a magnifying glass the float bowl overflow
tube for longitudnal cracks before using them.

I prefer to buy from dealers that look like they have good business with plenty of parts and good sale record on eBay or just very simple parts.

Where I bought my 836 pistons, the seller was very clear what was included. It was exact as told when I received the parts!
I bought a Flex-Hone (64mm-69 mm bore) for half price and 1/3 shipping cost than most of the other. Hondabond for $8.95US, 15.51 incl shipment to Sweden. All of them small business sites as it looked like.

The shipping cost is important to check when a part can cost very little but huge shipping.

eBay is very good, maybe to good when the shopping cravings attack me! Here in Europe we have eBay.de, eBay.co.uk, and amazon sites in the same way.
All forums give me inspiration too. Now SOHC forum, before  Audi forums that gave me good upgrade/tuning/service ideas that delayed my CB750 return with 2 years. Earlier Home Cinema forums that gave me ideas for about $30.000US during 5 years. Possible to order stuff 24/7! :-)

When the listing for carbs is very curt, it's because there is a lot of bad things they don't want to come out and say because they won't get as much for their crappy carbs.

They might take some pictures and if you didn't see something, then you are to blame in their eyes cause it was all right there.

If they don't have pictures of the floats off, then assume they are filled with lacquer and it's nasty in there.  You wouldn't believe how many listings for carbs don't even say whether they move and aren't stuck.

If you aren't seeing full disclosure then there is deception at some form going on.

When I have sold carbs I tell the customer they are READY TO USE.
I am sure they will check out the float bowls when they get them. and see all of the new parts.

But where does it all stop? First sellers started showing photos of all the float bowls off. Now everyone is doing it.
Whats next, photos of the slides out ,,,photos of the inside of the bore of the carb, photos of the carbs being cleaned? Close microscopic photos??? Crazy.

IF it says needs a little TLC...watchout!! Lol..lol

Lucky you know what you're doing though and probably have the feedback to back it up.

I'm talking about the other guys that do all kinds of shady stuff on there, you go look at their feedback and see people aren't happy with what they got.

Me too. Deja Vu? ;) In any case, this thread doesn't belong on the tech forum. Maybe it's time to start a forum dedicated to rants....

Oh hey Srbakker--last time I checked out your build thread you were waiting on some parts I think.  Are you up and running?  You might already be on another project, if I remember right I sold you cb750 carbs.

Not even close to up and running.  This was always going to be a slow project for me - work and family life make time precious and I figured 3-4 from the start.  I am now 1.5 years in!  I have a roller (well, I will when I bother to put the wheels back together anyway).  The engine is slated for probably next year (I'm accumulating parts and doing my research, since it's my first project and all) and the last year will be final touches and body paint, tuning, etc.  And yes, I have your carbs all ready to go (which is awesome, as carbs and electric are probably my biggest sources of anxiety here).
