CB550 cam swap valve adjust
« on: September 28, 2012, 01:15:51 PM »
I swapped my cam a cb650 cam which fit fine and turned around no problems. I have the head cover back on and am trying to set valve clearances. The problem is that when I turn it to TDC mark like my manual says, the rear rocker arm has no play. At all. If I go a hair past the mark, I can get some clearance on the valve. Is this bad? I thought TDC was were the rocker arms would have the most slack.

Thanks.

Dumb question but assuming your cam timing is correct are you sure you're at TDC at the end of the comp stroke and start of the power stroke?

I was following MCRiders advice on this thread: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=100724.msg1124369#msg1124369

However, the spot that I find IN/EX both have the most play is at the 2-3 Hash. Did I install something wrong so as to get 90 degrees out of phase?

Is that what would happen if I didn't line the notch up when I installed it? I can't remember what I did but I think I was struggling to get the chain on, not align the notch.

It wouldn't hurt to pull the valve cover off just to dbl check the cam timing and make sure. Luckily it's a 550 rather than a 750. :)

Make sure that notch is aligned and that you're at the 1-4 T mark on the timing plate. Otherwise you'll wreck it the instant it goes on.

Yep. That was it. the chain and everything was all off. Now it is straight and back on. One step closer to being back on the road!

Awesome! That's how it goes- two steps forward, one step back. I'm wrapping up a month-and-a-half-long, top-end rebuild myself, and this exact thing gave me issues as well.

Yeah. I just need to do the valve clearance. And I lost the end cap to one of my unipods. Not sure what I'll do about that.
