weak takeoff
« on: July 05, 2006, 10:44:54 AM »
I've yet to figure out why my 72 350f has such a weak takeoff in 1st.  I've adjusted float height to spec, cleaned jets, air mix screws are out one full 360 turn and synced to a manometer.  It idles perfect but still it stalls alittle bit before it gets just the right amount of fuel then it will takeoff.  Once it's going all other gears are pretty responsive.

I want it peel out when I let out the clutch...It is only a 350 and I am 200lbs but It should at least be more responsive than this.

what is usually the culprit, is it more than a carb issue?  operator issue?

Does the bike have stock air filtration and exhaust matched to the stock carburetor settings you've chosen?

Is your timing advance mechanism working smoothly?

Do you have compression test numbers?

I did forget to mention that the exhaust is 4 to 1 and as far as I know the PO left the jets stock.  I haven't looked into how to find out if the jets are actually stock, I'm only assuming.  I wouldn't know what adjustments would need to be made to suit a 4 to 1 exhaust anyhow, this is how I purchased the bike.  maybe I could get some help on this in the process.

stock air filter

I still haven't made a timing light, I'll look into that and post some compression readings as well.

Before you attack carburetion.  Make doubly certain all the standard tuneup items are addressed and and correct.

Tappets
Cam chain tension adjusted
Cylinder Compression numbers verified
Spark plugs new or cleaned, gapped, correct heat range
Ignition timing correct, advance mechanism working smoothly.
Air filter new or cleaned to new specifications.
Carburetors synched.
Idle Air bleed screws set/adjusted per manual.

Then address carb internals as needed.

Read the spark plug deposits for combustion conditions (plug chops)

You might want to review your sprocket ratios on your drive chain.  If a PO changed them for lower RPM at cruise, start up acceleration suffers, as would tire and wheel mods if existent.

I don't know what the stock tooth counts were for a 350F, though.  Maybe someone else will post that here.

ya know, those pistons are really small, and there is not a whole lot of power in the motor at lower rpm. i'm not too sure you can get rubber on take off.

Spray a little water / bleach under the rear tire, rev to 8000 RPM, and dump the clutch?

I'm gonna get mine to wheelie once I work out the JATO rocket attatch points  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Honda made a K8? Really? You guys are funning with me right?  ;) :D ;D ;D ;D ;D

We called 'em the "shotglass racers", 'cuz that's how big the pistons are. Sweet little bikes, though, and handle REAL good, like the 400-4.
