Squealing Brakes - running out of ideas.
« on: October 26, 2012, 09:52:53 AM »
I  have  a  1973 Honda  CB500.    The  front  disc brake  is  squealing  when i  apply the brake about  half way.   It  is not hanging up or squealing while  moving , only when  applied.    So  far  we  have   replaced the brake pads,  using a more organic pad,  less metalic,   put on a new  rotor,  and  replaced the brake fluid.    adjusted  several times  the caliper position,  little nut and screw to adjust so that the rotor is centered between the pads.   It  continues to squeal.    I  have noticed  though that it seems to squeal more  after the brake  has warmed up.     I am out of  ideas  on how to fix or even diagnos  the problem.

Anybody have some useful  ideas ?

When I got my bike it came with some anti-squeal stuff that apparently goes under the brake pads. Might be worth checking out.

Make a notch with a handsaw in the brake pad. (find more about it in earlier threads).

I wonder if that would help displace water, too? Sort of like a drilled rotor, but the other half of the equation...

i faund that orginal pads are raundet on the back..så the piston  pressure are in mittel ,,and the pads can turn a bit..to stay paralen to the disc..if it are flat( like aftermarked) hvere the piston press, the radius the caliber moves in..vill not adlow the hole pad to press full kontakt..this caliber mowes not parelel..but in a kurve/sirkel..??not shure of the english vord...

the 1969  have an ekstra spacer between piston and pad..but that are long gone...but with todays pad material..non asbestos..the old desein can be better

hope you can get it :-X
i kan not speak english/but trying!!

I got you strynboen. ill translate  ;D
the rear of the OEM pad might be slightly convex, which allows the pad to shift/rock slightly so there is full face contact with the rotor. new pads have a concave backing, which makes the pad sit flush in the housing.  if the rotor is not perfectly parallel with the caliper, the pad will sit on edge against the rotor (you'll see an uneven wear edge) and it will ride this way until it wears and full pad contact is achieved.  check for the uneven edge wear
and get a teflon spacer, or something like the link i posted behind the stationary pad.

A small amount of high temp silicon grease behind the caliper-side pad will solve your problem. Apply once a year and you are good to go - squeal free :)

Small pots can be found on eBay and are cheap as chips:

Exactly what I do. You can find all kinds at auto parts stores "anti squeak" or copper grease.
