So because several members here said that it was a direct swap, I've been collecting '75-'76 GL1000 parts for the past few months; refinishing, rebuilding, restoring; bringing everything up to first class. Several hundred dollars and dozens of hours of blood, sweat and tears later, I had everything I needed. Was a bit concerned that the fork legs were about three inches longer than the stock legs, but figured I had a way around it, so I started the project this morning.

Long story short, the steering stem isn't even close to fitting. It's at least an inch longer than the CB500 stem, which means the two threaded areas and the area where the top race press fits are in the wrong spot. It may be possible to find someone with a lathe to continue the threads and turn down the press fit area, but then again it may not. Certainly this has turned into a much more complicated project than I had believed, and I am pretty damn pissed at the moment.

Now, I'm hoping that I've just missed something, and I'm hoping that someone around here who claims that this swap works will arrive to explain to me what I need to do.

If the stems are the same diameter you should be able to press out the GL one and press in the 500 stem.
I sold a 500 stem to a guy last year and he used it on his 550 to mount a CBR front end.

I've read about pressing out stems. Things is, they're welded. Am I supposed to grind off the weld, hammer out the stems, and reweld the 500 stem to the GL1000 clamp?

They are welded Noel, so that front end is just junk to you, but don't give it to CBJ, he's been very argumentative with you of late, re: smacking would be Evel Kneivels, so I say send it to me mate, i'm yer fren.................... Ha ha, Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Noel, from what I've heard from Greg (ohiocaferacers.com), you grind off the weld, press (not
hammer) out the stems, press in the one you need, weld it (or have it welded) and install it.

After all those nasty things you've been saying behind Noels back about him being a flaming gay 500 rider who can't handle a real bike like yours and has to carry a gun cos he can't handle himself mate because he's a "shirt lifter"? I don't think so! ;D

Shouldn't that be worth at least 4 6 oil coolers considering Terry's cost?!

Would tool should I use to press out the stem?

A hydraulic press would be ideal. If your shop doesn't have one, look in the yellow pages for a Truck Service shop; they have all the big heavy stuff. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to press out & press in.

I'd try it with an arbor press first, but then my shop has a hydraulic press too.

Just as a tech note....it takes a talented(master) lathe operater to continue existing threads. It's a real #$%* and isn't for "hobbyist".

Arg. It's hard for me to see how the thing could be chucked into a lathe with the clamp still attached anyway. Guess I will see if I can find anywhere that can attempt to press the things out for me.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Noel, you be careful now. You've got a couple of Hungry Vultures hovering around over that
front end and, unless you shoo them off, they'll pick you clean!!  Ha!;DHa!;DHa!;D

Sorry there Terry and cbj, gotta try to protect the unaware. You would use a cross with a
       vampire, I don't know what you'd use for "HONDA" vultures.  :D :D

See, there he goes again with his rascist remarks! Surely Noel, you're not considering giving your beautiful (but useless to you) parts to some red neck nazi?

I see you're having problems with machining that steering stem mate, so I tell you what, send the ENTIRE front end to me, and I'll make sure it'll fit, and send it back to you! (eventually.................) ;D

Honestly, I think it's a shame that there's more interest in picking over Noel's project than in helping him straighten out this disaster.  Although I agree that picking up existing threads is a difficult process, it can be done.  Good Luck.
