Behind the barn find- A 750 Christmas Surprise!
« on: December 26, 2012, 11:18:30 AM »
Since I was a kid growing up I would go out to my uncle’s small farm in eastern Colorado to enjoy lunch with my dad’s side of the family on the holidays. They have about eight old barns on their land and as a kid (even still) I just loved exploring the old buildings and seeing the animals. Now I have a young daughter and she’s just as adventurous as I am so I bundled her up to go play on the farm. My wife asked me to look for any barn wood that could be reclaimed to make a rustic dining table and I thought this would be fun to search for with Delia.

So we’re out tromping trough the dirt and snow, climbing on the tractors, and looking at some of the collapsed outbuildings when we turn toward the backside of a small barn in search for horses and wood. From about forty yards I see the frontend of an old looking bike… I say to myself, “No way, that’s a vintage bike!” I was unable to recognize it because of the odd but cool faring I’d never seen before. As I get closer I start thinking that’s an old Honda, walking faster now I begin to see the same look and lines of my own CB750 and sure enough it’s a 750 (1973)! My sister, cousin, and daughter catch up but fail to understand my excitement. I feel like a six year old on Christmas!!! They think I’m crazy for jumping around in excitement over this pile. I tried to excite them too but I only get odd stares in return. So I’m no longer interested in looking for wood and hurry inside to show my wife pictures of my discovery. Her response, “ooohh, what so cool?”. Of course it’s not wood so she’s not so excited either. I go to my aunt and say, “So, there’s an old motorcycle behind the barn?”
“Yeah, would you like to have it?” she says.
I’d love to have it!
“You can have it. I’ll have to ask my son to be sure but it’s been buried in the barn for 15 years and was given to him by his father in-law. I don’t think he’d mind at all.” She continues, “We moved it out of a barn we fixed up a couple years ago.”

I’m now thinking back to all the time’s I’ve explored the barns and wonder if I ever came upon this not even knowing what it was… other than a motorcycle. I must have seen it before, only not since I came to treasure such things from the past. It was a great Christmas and something to add to my memories of their farm. Perhaps some of you can understand my excitement.

My plan is to pick it up and take it to my parent’s garage to see what I’ve got. From there I’ll have to decide whether to sell any useful parts and use the money to continue the restoration of my 75 or rebuild as a café racer and continue with the 75’s restoration. This frees me from the struggle between wanting both a stock 750 and a café racer out of the same bike.
I’ll try to find out more on the history not spent in the barn. I doubt a title will turn up and last tag was 1991. the motor did not kick over. Can anyone tell me anything about the fairing?

Great story - don't expect them to understand, it wont happen. That is a very unique fairing, does not look familiar to me.
Sad to see these bikes just sit outside and rust, but good candidate for a cafe.

I'm still thinking on this sentence.  ;)

Of course it’s not wood so she’s not so excited either.

That fairing is strange looking. Don't recall ever seeing one like that. Same with the rear shocks. Is that a CB radio mounted on the fairing ??? How many miles is on it? I guess this is why Honda came out with the GW because people where installing stuff like this on there CB750's.

Looks like a manufacture plate on the right side of the fairing.

Thanks guys. The shocks looked like airbags...  didn't spend much time looking over the fairing but I only noticed where an emblem may have been at one time. I tried to upright it but the back wheel is buried in sand. And yes, it's a CB radio! There was not much rust from what I could tell but we'll see when I dig it out and brush the snow off.

Definately NOT a Vetter/Windjammer or a Califia fairing. Rear shocks could have been an aftermarket item for the 75 GW and mounted on the CB750. SOME of the early GW parts would crossover to the 750.

My S & W air shocks mounted with the bag-half up. Those were intended for another bike. Too fat top and bottom for a CB750.

If you need a hand loading and/or unloading give me a shout. If it's close to Burlington I'll be there tomorrow through Sat 1pm.

CAUTION, CAUTION, CB RADIO NERD DAVE IS IN THE HOUSE! PREPARE TO HAVE YOUR PANTS BORED OFF! ;d
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Bandit #1 and Bandit #2. Just need a black 1977 Trans Am to go along with it ;D

Keith, so this 750 had been stored away in one of the barns many years ago and than roll outside several years and forgot about. To bad during one of your walks around the property over the years you didn't find it earlier while still in the barn or right after they threw it outside in the elements.

Sent a message to my cousin who lives in Kansas and still waiting for a reply... It's only been outside the barn since summer 2011 I believe. Otherwise I would have seen it sooner. I'm too young to know anything about CB radios but I imagine it would be very useful in the 70s traveling across the states. I'll certainly ask about any other parts that might be stashed in the barn and hope to get lucky. One of my younger cousins said there's another bike out there somewhere. Also, to turn 180 degrees from the bike is a 1956 4-door Bel Air in a state similar to the bike. A much more expensive project for sure. Over

Well, I'm facing the decision of parting it out or building it... Without a motor that turns over OR title, it makes building it less attractive to me now. If only I had one of the two it would make the decision easy. I sent a message to the registered owner a few weeks ago just asking him to send me the title if he still has it and does not object to me having the bike. No response yet. To make it worse, the motor does not turn even after putting some acetone and ATF in the spark plug holes and letting it soak. One of the inside cylinders has a spark plug that broke off at the hex leaving just the threads in the head. So now the head needs to come off I think. I pulled the motor and tried an easy out without success. It seems there may not be much value in this bike unfortunately...

AS recently as 1998, my wife and I had CBs in our respective tank bags (she rode her own) helmet munted speakers, voice to talk mics. Pretty popular stuff.

My motor had the same issue. The PO broke the plugs, and threads were stuck and no easy out would work. I just bought a replacement head off ebay for $50 shipped and installed over a weekend.  Don't give up! Work on getting the title!  8)
