I ran into the same problem as Greenjeans did with replacing the front sprocket.  This motor's countershaft doesn't have enough meat to get a 'shouldered' sprocket on far enough with room to fit the locking plate.  So, the 16-tooth sprocket I got from CycleX doesn't fit...I'm ordering the flat 16-toother from Dennis Kirk.  This bike isn't for flogging, so I'm not worried about any breakage from new sprockets and a new chain.  Maybe I'll set up the K4 I have for my dad with a 16/45 gearing so he can have some fun ;D

Here's where Greenjeans explains the problem better than I want to:

1969 CB750K

Need new front sprocket.   I know I can get one from Honda but it's twice as much as an aftermarket.

I picked up a JT sprocket at a local dealer.

Looks like this:

However, it will not fit.   The bolt pattern is correct, but the plate that goes on the spline and then rotates to enable the bolts to thread into the sprocket to keep it in place won't go.

The sprocket has a lip/shelf that is approximately the width of the plate.

http://www.westernhillshondayamaha.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=125962&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1969&fveh=2998

The guy swears to me he sells them all the time and that they fit my bike.    JT sprockets web page also shows it to fit my bike.    However, the locking plate WILL NOT fit.

Everything is clean as a whistle.     What gives ?    Do I just need to spring for the more expensive Honda sprocket ?     Surely there is an aftermarket option.

Success - just got off the phone with DennisKirk - One of their guys actually took 3 different sprockets out of their packaging and measured them.   Problem solved.   Customer service is refreshing.

It is amazing how I can overthink the simplest things.

In case anyone is interested, this sprocket is the same dimensions (8.7mm thick) as the type in my photo.

If you have access to a mill, it's pretty easy to mill the shoulder off one side, takes about 15 minutes
If it works good, it looks good...

I'll just save it for another bike..I'm not worried about using a flat one on this bike.

Progress....

Am I going slow enough for you? ;D ;D

Well, let's just say it's not hard to keep up!

I shouldn't say a thing, I've got two projects in the garage that are moving at a snails pace.  My excuse is I hate working when it's 90 degrees in the garage.

My excuse is the distance (60 miles) between me and the shop.

Progress....

Am I going slow enough for you? ;D ;D

I've got that department covered Greg, your flying mate.... ;D ;)

I forgot about that monster you're building!  Have you got a build thread for that one yet?

No not yet, once i started collecting parts it quickly turned into 3 bikes... :o Found another frame yesterday so possibly 4.... {shakes head}, good news is that I will be starting the first build {K2} as soon as my next box of parts arrives from the States... 8) The Monster is still a while away.... :-[

Why does it feel like everything I do on this bike takes forever?!?  Oh yeah, because it does!

Tires came in the mail today, but they're not mounted yet...so, no roller yet.  But, I got the top tree, gauges, forks, boots, and ears installed.  I got my Dennis Kirk flat 16-tooth sprocket in there too.  The early countershafts on these sandcasts need the flat (non-shouldered sprockets)

I didn't want it to be too meaty in the back.  110 is closer to stock anyway.

I have 110 rear on all my bikes, several thousand miles, all running cast aluminum mag rims, starting to flat out in the center of the tires.

I should post a pic of the rear tire on the K2 rolling chassis I've got here, it's so square it looks like a vintage car tire. It's not surprising that the engine blew up.......... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Current project next to the new project ;D

Got a CL72 today!  It was pretty much free...motor's locked up, so we pulled the plugs and sprayed Kroil down the cylinders.

Worked on the sandcast today.  Installed the starter motor, cam chain tensioner, exhaust pipes, headlight bucket, and a few odds and ends.

+1.   You know what we say, the cheapest bikes are the most expensive.  But doubt you'll do a full restore on the CL like your Sandy.

Thanks guys.  I thought you'd all like that scrambler...I'm Really liking it.  Here's the story: Pop's shop partner scored it from the guy who painted my sandcast frame/black parts.  He also picked up a Lancia Fulvia there too.  But he only paid $40 for the bike, knowing I'd want it if no one else did ;D Well, I guess no one else wanted it (he tried too ;D ;D ) so I got it.  I might even get a title for it too :)

Pops putting some Kroil down the plug holes.

Bad sign with the locked up motor?

1965, right?

I'll start another thread on this bike when I tear into it.

It's got a little bit of work to go before I get here ;D ;D ;D
