I hadn't touched the brake caliper since taking the bike apart almost a year ago, so it needed a cleaning inside and out.  The piston was too pitted to reuse, so I took another caliper apart to borrow its piston, which was still good.  Carburetors are clamped into their boots.  Taillight's installed.  I also put a filter in the turned down oil filter housing so I could fill the oil bag and kick it over...feels NICE now ;D

Oops, I guess it was just under a year...September last year that I got it fully torn down.

It isn't wired just yet.  I'd been waffling over whether to use the harness I fixed up or buy the Z1 parts harness.  I had a little extra cash from helping my dad sell a Porsche part, so I bought the Z1 harness today.  I was afraid the wires that Hondaman described in his book as barely adequate in 1969 might not be up to the task 45 years later.  I also wanted the harness to look brand new, which wasn't going to happen with my repaired loom.  I'll feel much more secure about the electrical health of the bike now.  I'm going to wire it up next week, and try to get the bike running as soon as possible.

Z1 parts.net?  Think I would have replaced the harness too under those circumstances.

Yes, Z1parts.net

The old wires in harness were still pretty brittle even with the new wrapping, and some of the brand new connectors plugging into the yellowed housing just didn't look right.  I don't even know that the harness I rebuilt was original to the bike.  It was missing the part number tag, and it could have just come from the K1 that donated so many parts to this chassis before I got it.  I'll be much more confident riding it and selling it with all new wires.

That Z1parts.net harness is very well built.  I'm impressed with it!  The bike is mostly wired up now, and the throttle cable is hooked up and functional.  I couldn't stand the way the bare metal front caliper looked, so I painted it with the same duplicolor as the engine and it's all purdy now ;D  I realized I had installed the clutch cover without the lifter plate or mechanism ;D ;D so I rounded up all the parts and got that in there without breaking the lifter plate.

I discovered that one of the oil lines I refurbished is leaking, and it had to be the more difficult one to change ::) But, I'm getting much closer to my goal of starting the motor next week!

Looks very pretty even without tank and side covers.

Seems like the carbs slanted too high up?

They are a little too high.  I think the boots have to be rotated a little bit.

Gents, I have a running sandcast. Didn't even need the choke! A German guy who exports bikes and cars from the states is very interested in buying this bike when I'm done.  He stopped by the shop to talk with one of the mechanics, saw my bike and fell in love with it.

CONGRATS!  You have got to be stoked - it's running and you have a potential buyer.

Get it buttoned up so I can nominate you for BOTM. Great job, Greggo.

You got it Dude!  Hopefully DONE in the next week or two...a few little tuning items left, and things I left until the end to buy (headlight, front turn signals).  I also need to rebuild the front master cylinder and paint it.  Today I did install the brake caliper with a fresh seal, NOS lines, and the junction.  Also wired the tail light, and painted some front foot peg brackets...Still lots of little stuff it feels like.

Congrats Gregg!

Thanks Tews!  You riding Goldie a lot?  How's that one doing?

Gregg quick question. Did you go with the yamiya controls? If I recall you stated you did. Are the wires really long in the headlight bucket when comparing to stock honda hand control wires?

The RHS is Yamiya.  The LHS is NOS Honda.  I never thought about it, but I guess the wires from that switch do go out a little further than the LHS wires.  You can see it sticking out from the headlight shell in that last picture from the front.

Getting really close now!  Last few needed parts came in the mail today for next week...New points plate, NOS tank rubbers, side/kickstand rubbers for exhaust pipes, and a few other bits and bobs.

Damn. I'm just frustrated with this bike.  There's a leak coming from the pucks on the #3 cylinder on the #2 cylinder side.  I get a couple drops pooling on the head fins above the head gasket...it's the classic puck leak. I went to install the rear brake stay and rod, and discovered I'd forgotten to install the pedal's cam in the forward position before installing the swing arm...now the swing arm needs to come off to accommodate the two inch movement.  The 3 and 4 carburetors started leaking from the drains after running fine and holding gas for three weeks.  Had to remove the right side pipes to fix an exhaust leak, then helicoil an exhaust clamp (which had been re-chromed) after its threads gave up.  It sucks when there's no one to blame!  I did get my registration started last week.  I had a damn fiasco over back fees I wasn't told about when I first tried to register it, but I got hooked up somehow, and it only cost me four times what I thought it would to register it.  I still have to bring it to the CHP for a VIN verification, but the office is close by if I can get it done in the next few weeks.

Definitely hang in there bud! I'm in the same boat on my build. Those tins look top notch! Did you trim back the paint on the neck where you put gas and seal it? Caduncle mentioned his gas tank started bubbling in that spot.

I haven't put the petcock or cap on the tank yet.  I was running it with a remote tank.
