Is it a problem?
Taking off the exhaust is easy done. Change oil each driving season when the exhaust might be off anyway.

I ride wayyyy more than 1500 miles in a year. Probably change my oil twice a month in the summer time.  Taking the exhaust off for each oil change is a pain-  a pain that would be worth it for a track bike or something you don't ride much, but for daily driving it's a deal breaker, IMO.

It was long time ago I used my bike, but in those days I changed oil+filter each season or at 5000miles (8000km). Street and touring, not racing.

Its a race designed pipe, not a bad design, maybe bad for some on the street but not a bad design.... ;D ;)  I actually like removing my pipe a couple of times a year, keeps the threads on the studs clean and makes removal of the pipe easier when needed... ;)

I found a few filters with OD's of 3" on ebay. one by hastings and one by K&N. Im gonna contact the people at randakk to make sure the diameter of the gasket will work because their website only says 3" or less on the gasket. The Hastings gasket is 2.75 in diameter. I just measured my carpy header and it looks like i have a 3 1/4"- 3 3/8" gap between the two middle header pipes= Im buying a randakk with spin-ons and ill never have to remove the pipes. I'll try to post back ASAP on my final results but it looks good on paper.

A wee bit off topic - I have a 76 Cb550 with carpy exhaust, can you tell me how you have your carbs jetted and air screws set, as well as what carb air filters your using?

That would make it easier, however, the oil change interval for the 750 is 1500 miles, or every 3 months.  Air cooled engines are a lot harder on oil.

The folks at Randakks emailed me back and the minimum ID spin on filter you can use with their system is a 2.25" I have found several filters with a OD Of 3" and an ID of 2.4-2.5" My exhaust headers are 3.25" apart so I will now be spending 65$ and using modern filters with better tech and not have to take off my exhaust. I appreciate the effort from u guys.

My bike is a 76 750 so I'm not sure exactly of your setup but seems like going up 2 on the main would be a good start if no other engine mods or air filters.

Did they suggest a particular filter brand and model (or application)? Thanks. RR

No they did not. It doesnt really matter which filter you use brand wise. Just make sure its 3/4" 16 thread and from research I've done on filters I would purchace K&N, Napa, Bosch among others which are also good quality. The bosch is a rebrand of purolator pure one i believe. I picked a K&N HP- 1002 but several others will fit. I tried to stay away from the taller ones to keep it away from the exhaust pipes and heat but also didnt want to go too small so the filter would have more than enough cleaning surface inside. I also picked the K&N because it has a 1" nut welded to the top for easy install and removal.
